Years of messages and threads gone. GTAM history wiped out. Who cares?

Am I the only one bothered by the recent deletion of "old threads" with thousands of messages, years of GTAM community history and a treasure chest of information for riders, both new and old?

I couldn't care less about the post count, but I deeply care about all the energy me and other members of this forum invested in making this board a library of useful information that will be of value for years to come. Our contributions are gone now and future ones are severely devalued by the fact that they can be wiped out any time.

Paul, I hold you personally responsible. This may be your private system, but it holds valuable information contributed by and used by the entire community for over a decade. You have assumed the responsibility and have been given confidence to be a good custodian of that information. You have betrayed that confidence.

Maybe I was living in the fairyland, but it never occurred to me that my serious contributions (not to mention countless hours spent collecting and presenting information) will be wiped out on someone's whim or due to their gross incompetence.

To add insult to injury, this is all the information we get, and that only after we complained:

No "I made a backup and will restore it once we get the current issues sorted out.", no "This is what I deleted, please let me know if anyone wants a copy for their personal archive.", no "I am deeply sorry, but all posts older than X years are deleted and won't be coming back.", no "We are having issues with X and need help to provide Y so we don't have to delete old posts.", no...

I can't find any excuse. Can you?

I couldn't agree more.. I'm sure there are plenty of IT admins (including myself). That would have been happy to help fix the issue.

Deleting posts didn't solve anything. It may have helped with the speed for now.. But the posts aren't stopping and we will be in the same place in a few months. Maybe not, cause after something like this... I could see alot of people leaving...

All the how-to threads, dummy questions answered.. I've seen some ride reports that must have taken hours to write.

My transcontinental ride report from last summer (http://transcontinental.xxc.cc) escaped the axe, probably only because it's relatively new. I'm relieved, not thankful - it took me more than a week to write that one and I'll be moving it to a more secure location as soon as I can. My James Bay Road ride plan and report threads are apparently gone the way of the Dodo. They will live only in the memory of those that read them or participated in the ride. For everyone else it's like it never happened and countless people will be deprived of learning from our experience. How many others like that are gone? We will find out only if we search for them. I'm glad I never stored any pictures on this board or accepted private messages...

Does this mean I can ask what 600 SS bike I should get as a beginner, where the best insurance rates are for a 18 year old rider, how much for a powder coat, if my bike is safe in a condo,if a Icon back protector offers sufficient protection, what's with all these squids, and is Boston Pizza a good place to meet other riders again with out anyone jumping down my throat and scolding me to use the search function?

I think the answer is YES.

I say there should be a 'knowledge-base' section of the servers.
Most stickies have stayed though...so answer is no

I agree completely. That was a massive delete.

Yeah, I was pretty surprised at the massive delete out of nowhere. And I'm not gonna lie, I was kinda ******, although I know it's pretty lame to get angry over something like this.

A whole bunch of google searches related to fixing a bike or riding one would result with a few GTAM links near the top...guess most of those will not work anymore :(

What's lame is deleting years of other peoples work on purpose and without as much as a heads up to those who may want to save some of it. I can't even begin to express my disgust at such a blatant disrespect for an entire community you are supposed to be a pillar of. I would be inclined to accept it as an honest mistake if it was owned up to with at least a modicum of remorse and personal integrity.

Battle of the frenchies...

Hey look, soon enough we'll have the same amount of posts :D hahah

I hope Paul restores the deletes. A LOT of the value here is the old posts.

And arbitrarily deleting old posts discourages people from spending time on new posts, which further takes from the value of GTAM.
