Yamaha's Triple

Yamaha had 4-stroke triples years (decades) ago...
The new Honda NC700 is the target for any new "revolutionary" design, these days.
A 3-cyl version, undersquare, with a bit more cc and higher RPM would appeal to all.
Maybe ~60 mpg, instead of the 75 mpg of the NC, with more performance... sweet!
Some bikes are not very efficient. ZX14 gets ~30mpg if you wick it heavily...

How about rotary engines?

or diesel engines, turboed of course :D

For an adventure bike or long-distance tourer maybe, but why would you want such a heavy engine in something that is supposed to be light and fun? Assuming the range doubles (not unreasonable), could you sit on an SS for twice as long without taking a break to let the boys recover? If you have to stop every couple hours to stretch anyway, filling up isn't a big deal.

How about rotary engines?
I would think that besides the maintenance factor of those engines, the design itself doesn't really work well with a motorcycle, simply because you have that one large mass rotating around. If you mount it so the shaft is perpendicular with the bike, that centrifugal force will make it harder to get the bike to turn in. If you mount it with the shaft in parallel with the bike, then it will turn in easier to one direction and harder in the other.
But, that's just my mind thinking.
Yes, we have crank shafts, but the crank shaft is a much lower portion of the weight than the big rotating assembly in the rotary. Plus our crank shafts are counter balanced and the action of the pistons and connecting rods I'm sure also helps. Plus the typical engine, you can replace parts as needed, despite the rotary being simpler, most that wrench don't have any issue rebuilding a piston engine.

There are diesel powered bikes out there already... And have been for a long time, if you weren't already aware.
