Went to change my oil and filter on 01 SV650S and found this crap in my filter:

Now I'm freaking out! Give it to me straight doc! I can take it like a man. What's the prognosis?

It's probably the interior of the filter, torn into little pieces. Cut the can open and see.

What brand of filter is that?

Hard to tell from the picture, it's either the filter media itself or the anti-drainback valve has broken up. Probably good to do what El Zilcho said and cut it up, and look at the threads for the filter on the bike side to try and see if anything has worked its way up. Could be a problem ... also, in the future, buy anything but FRAM. OEM filters are a good place to start if you're not sure.

It looks like the material they make cam chain tensioners out of. Are those bits really hard like plastic or are they somewhat pliable. If pliable I agree it is the rubber drain back valve that self destructed.

I'm with....ahhh....that guy ^^^

Suggestion: Never use Fram spin-on oil filters in anything. Problem here is that Fram makes filters for a lot of other brand names.

The Fram cartridge filters seem not too bad because the way those filters are constructed normally doesn't allow Fram the option of using their cheapskate manufacturing methods.

For spin-on filters, I've been using the Purolator PureOne filters, which are tough to find in Canada, but some of the parts vendors have them.

It's hard like plastic. Not pliable at all.

That wouldn't have got by the oil pickup screen so I'm going to say it's the actual oil filter that has failed. I would get a new brand of filter and change the oil asap. My main concern now would be if the plastic bits are or might end up blocking any oil passages in the engine.

It is not from the filter! The outer ring in the inlet and the center is the outlet. As already mentioned, the debris looks like a cam chain tensioner or guide has broken up.

Strain the old oil and see if any debris is in it.
I would remove the oil pan and check for debris in the pan and in the strainer on the oil intake.

I don't see any possible mechanism for chunks of cam chain guide THAT big to ever get through (a) the pick-up screen on the inlet of the oil pump, (b) the oil pump gerotor itself, and (c) the passages in and out of the oil pump.

Regardless of where that stuff came from, having a look around inside the oil pan and under the valve cover is still a good idea.

Here's the filter innards folks:

The pieces were not stuck together, came apart easily. Let me know what the consensus is.

I'll look into the oil pan and valve cover.
