Would you recommend this tire configuration???

So it's time to change my rear tire. But my front tire still has plenty of life left in it. Hence, I would like to only change the rear tire.

Right now I have a set of Bridgestone Battlax BT016 on the bike.

I am dying for a set of the brand new Bridgestone S20s, but cannot justify buying a new front tire when I dont need it.

I know you're not supposed to mix-match different front and rear tires. But the S20 from Bridgestone is essentially the next generation of BT016? It seems they are a very similar tire.

Could I keep my Bridgestone BT016 in the front and put a Bridgestone S20 in the rear? Or would you guys advise against this?

Thnx for your advice

I have a S20 on the front of mine and a BT016 on the rear (the opposite of what you propose). Just did a week at Deals Gap with it. No problem.

You mean your bike didn't explode?

Op IMO as long as their the same category of tires(ie. hyper sport, sport touring) you'll be fine.

I guess I've been so brainwashed into never mixing different tires.

But the prices for the bt016 and s20 are the same. So I'd be paying same price for an inferior tire

I think I'll try and put the S20 on the rear.

Good plan :)

I have an OCD problem so if I were you, I'd just put another 16.
That's just me though.

Another possible scenario:
Replace both so they match, keep the good front tire as a spare.

A front tire would be a little more difficult to repair in the event of a flat because of how skinny they are compared to rears. Having a spare front won't do you any harm.

I'm just trying to keep down cost.

My chain and sprocket and full tire change is gonna cost over $720. Jesus

So you decided the best place to save some money would be on tires, the only thing connecting you to the road?
Good call...

No. That's not what I'm saying. That's why I'm Getting one of the more expensive tires with one of the shortest lifespans. (even though I know I will never outride these hyper-sport tires)

But if I can save 200$ by not having to replace a perfectly good front. Then I wont

Its 120 for the front.

If you're strapped for cash why not get a set of tires that last longer instead of one that's "sticky" but has a shorter life span?

Seems kinda backwards, but hey thats just my opinion.

Asking here you'll get plenty of opinions going both ways, in the end its your money, your bike and your life.

$120 for tire + shipping + $40 for installation.

I'm not strapped for cash, just my front tire is practically brand new. That's why it sucks

Thnx for the opinions everyone!

If you aren't going to take advantage of what the tire is designed for, why buy it? Sport tires are great in specific conditions.
What if you get rained out? Sure, they have treads which will somewhat disperse water but that isn't their primary job, nor secondary.

I put sport-touring tires on my R6 for 2 reasons: I plan to do a lot of mileage this summer, and I will most likely never ride hard enough on the street to exceed my tire's ability.
Personally I went with the PR2's but there are plenty of other options from different brands. Sport touring tires are becoming a lot stickier than people give them credit for.

As daisoman said though, you...generally...should be fine with mismatched tires.

I agree, and I have been debating putting on some sport-touring tires instead. I know Im not outriding my hyper-sport tires, but I like the idea that I have the grippiest tires possible, just in case. Its like buying a pair of expensive Asics running shoes, Im not running any marathons anytime soon, but god damn are they ever comfy. lol
