Will I get a red light camera ticket?

Hey everyone,

I was driving east on Lawrence near Bellamy road when the lights turned yellow. I had continued my course with intention to pass safely however the car turning left opposite of me started to creep forward which scared the hell out of me so I slammed on my brakes, but I couldn't stop in time and I passed the line a little.. I think I stopped on top of the crosswalk. Then the light flashed (I had already stopped). I knew that the red light camera took a picture. Do you think I will get a ticket for this?

Thanks

-Alex

If you do you can fight it saying that you DID stop as the picture will confirm (im sure they can see a difference if someone is stopped or in motion)
Otherwise i guess you could say the car tried to cut you off without seeing you and you did an emergency brake and it then turn yellow and red...

its all i can think of

It takes two pictures the second one shows you in the intersection after the light turned. If you did not continue into the intersection I wouldn't worry.

This. They have people that check the pictures and if you didn't proceed through the intersection you should be good.

Failing to stop for a Red Light in Ontario is an absolute liability offense, which means the courts are only interested in whether you stopped or proceeded through

you're not afforded a 'due-diligence' defense (ie. big rig was going to rear-end me, brakes failed)

I appreciate all your responses guys, makes me feel a lot better about this. I was freaking out because I was worried that there was a zero tolerance policy as in, it doesn't matter if I stopped or not, I passed the line.

Okay well I hope nothing comes in but I guess in worst case scenario, I would get a ticket in the mail then I'd ask to see the prosecutor. I would have to explain that the car across from me was starting to move and I thought he was going, so I slammed on the brakes and unfortunately stopped past the line.

What or who is cabby creep? lol

Cars that constantly inch forward at red lights (I think?)

If that is, then it depends on how far the car creeps into the intersection. If, in the two photos taken, it looks as though the car is proceeding through the intersection, then yes. But the car would have to be moving pretty fast.

I have a friend of a friend who I believe just started to drive even though it was red.. realized that it was red, and stopped. Now by this point the person was already half way in the intersection (lol) and he got a red light camera ticket in the mail.

I remember reading somewhere that the cameras are actually video cameras, and the flash is there to enhance the picture. They take still frames from the footage as described in the posts above.

Here are some notes on red light camera's in the city of Toronto:

QDo the cameras photograph every vehicle passing through an intersection?

A
The cameras are set so that only those vehicles that enter an intersection after the light has turned red are photographed. Vehicles that enter on yellow and are within the intersection when the light changes to red are not photographed. The program is intended to photograph vehicles that enter an intersection after the signal has turned red.

Wow, 313 tickets issued in Halton since March of this year. And that's with only two cameras installed in Halton.

They can tell your speed from the pictures, so usually what happens is that even though you are technically in violation, often the ticket won't be issued because its just someone stopping a bit past the line.

They catch enough people not to have to clamp down on the borderline cases.

I once got a red light ticket at derry rd and airport. I was heading east on derry and came to a stop before the light turned red. There was a transport truck with 53ft trailler making a right turn to go south on airport road beside me. First photo shows me a few feet behind the line with "my" speed at 45km/h and the truck with trailer starting to turn. Second photo shows the side of the trailer as the truck makes the turn and only the side of the trailer full frame. It was a giant waste of time for my boss because it was a work truck, it got tossed out because they couldn't prove I ran the light because the second photo only showed a side of a trailer in full frame.

In order for the redlight camera to go off you have to be moving through the intersection with out stopping. If you Stop and then go through the light then it will not go off. That is how cops get through these intersections, they have to come to a complete stop before proceeding through the intersection if it is red. If they don't stop and the camera goes off they have to pay the ticket.

Cheers,
Geoff

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!

PS "Cabby Creep" is a term I would like to believe I coined but in all honesty I may have heard once before, that describes the incessant creeping of taxi cabs at intersections where at times their entire car has entered the intersection at a red light!!!!! AAAAAAArghghghg

There's a good chance that the person who told me the story about accidentally accelerating from the red light lied about the story on how he got the ticket.. Because I know it won't go off if you move slowly

Hey,

sorry to bump this, I just wanted to let you guys knows that after more than 4 months now, I have not received a ticket. :p
