Will a tank bag always scratch a tank?

I have the SW-Motech Pro Tank Ring, it works well.

Givi also has something similar called TankLock:

+1

I’ve had a few sw-motech ones and Givi ones that mount on a tank ring and both are good. Givi is less expensive and will do the job just fine, but it certainly feels cheaper and my zipper broke on one bag on a long trip. Buy once, cry once.

Don’t think my newer sw-motech will ever break as it’s really well built. I like that it’s also got the magnetic ring for easier time getting it on. It’s also adjustable so it can slide slightly forward or back to better suit various riding positions or tank profiles.

If you/re feeling extra rich you can add power to the SW Motech ring and power your tank bag (for recharging phones etc). At least one of the SW Motech tank bags has a gps holder attachment available too. I have one, it’s actually pretty neat but I don’t use it any more.

Thinking about getting a tank bag, but I heard an opinion that no matter what bag you'll get you will end up with a scratched tank. I don't like the idea of having my bike's tank in scratches (people at Starbucks will laugh at me). So... What's your experience with the tank bags?
Mine scratched, not matter how careful I was. Now I still use a tank bag but I place it over a microfiber towel. The bright green towel may look funny but I care about my bike more.

Glad you don't have OCD. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I've got plenty of OCD, but thankfully I've accepted the 50 year old patina on my BMW and don't mind adding to it, within reason. The only trailer queen I have is sitting in my home office beside me (not the mini bike - that's getting trashed at the cottage).

If you can splurge the little extra cash, get yourself either a Givi or SW-Motech ring system. You can always transfer the bag to your other or future bikes. You may just need to get a different ring for said bike.

I have the SW-Motech system and have yet to ride with it as I got it in the winter but I know I will love it.

I had a small $35 magnetic tank bag before that and I have always found tank bags to be very useful.
I did manage to scratch my previous FZ6 a little with the magnetic bag. It bugged me for a bit and I eventually got over it.

KEEP IN MIND
SW-Motech had an EVO line with the snap ring which is now discontinued. Something to consider for future.
Their current line for the ring system is the PRO line. I would buy into this line as it might be harder to find rings for future bikes with the discontinued EVO line.

How solid are the bottoms of the SW Motech bags? I have an Oxford tank bag with ring system, but the bottom is starting to sag to the point where it touches the tank.

Very solid.

The locking system is magnetic. All you need to do is throw the bag onto the ring and it will align itself and engage the locking mechanism.

To release/remove it you pull on the red tether at the back of the back and it opens up the locking mechanism.
