Wifi 6 vs Ethernet? Any real world comparisons?

That's a good question....
You've listed several things that all point to where the real problems are and none of them are speed related.

"Currently, there is no problem with speed to the media server." "I am mostly pre-downloading shows, the sources are mainly 20-40GB 2160p x264 files for a 1.5-2 hour movie."
You've literally confirmed its not local network issue. Your current setup can provide the throughput to keep a 4k x264 movie buffered.

"We were Zoom teleconferencing over Christmas" What have you done to validate that this is your local network and not either a Zoom or ISP issue? (save you the effort, its zoom).

"I just got YouTube Premium and I have noticed that the TV is loading YouTube videos noticeably slower than my ethernet-connected laptop." Apples to oranges comparison with again no validation. Again, have you done an apples to apples comparison? Have you seen the same model smart TV running it well?

Either way, nothing you've said is saying its a throughput issue or a coverage issue. Also, throwing more APs into the mix just makes everything worse. If you have a coverage issue in your home, perhaps relocate the router and get a quality one. I have a single TPLink AC4000 and I can speedtest on my phone at the end of my driveway at my home internet max (500mbps).

Cable (if possible) will beat out IEEE 802.11 blah blah blah

There are just too too many variables with Wifi

Also you don't need $600+ switches for 10GBe, I am proof!

This setup was built ~5 years ago
  • Original Mikrotik Hap AC with 10GBe SFP+ card ~$200
  • Mikrotik CSS**** switch that supports 10GBe SFP+ card ~$300
  • SFP+ Transceiver were about $100-200 each bought in bulk
  • PCIe SFP+ were about $200 each bought in bulk
  • Current place has Ethernet jacks all over the house (cat5) so everything but the basement is 1GB. But what can actually max out 1GB???

!!!There are differences between 10GBASE-T and this SFP+ method!!!

I use Mikrotik CapsMan to deal with multiple APs (there's the one in the basement for 10GBe and then one closer to the patio). 3x3 chain and if you buy off eBay you can get unlocked firmware versions.

...The wifi is always more unstable...

When I can finally own a home, I want to jam in CAT7 all inside the walls. The future is probably gonna be 10GBASE-T because of the legacy RJ45 connector. Who knows when this will become mainstream though. Maybe upgrade the back-end to 40GB+ and the house uses 10GB :eek:

Why so much 10G and SFP?

I am probably going to update the house to have working 5Ghz (right now 2.4 is viable, 5G only works in a location where it doesn't help me. Probably using Unifi AP and wifi 6 is the same price as wifi 5 so might as well go 6. Need POE+ switch for AP's, so leaning towards Unifi 16 but not set on that yet. Router will get replaced (probably with Microtik). Where did you buy your microtik parts?

Edit:

Whatever ^$^!"@sucking pos wire monkey wired my house, go ^#%@% yourself. Data and phone use the same colour cable, copper on some data lines twisted into the phone lines. Not a single label anywhere. Fack.

At least 30 potential cables in a rats nest.

One comes out of the wall and goes back in. Dont know yet if that is a loop or if the end is buried.

Another only pokes 1" out of the wall. That's going to be a treat if that's one I need. (It turns out that it's the kitchen so if I need a drop there I can use the 5e they had for phone instead).

Three unlabeled punch down blocks being used for phone but some of the cables tied into them have data Jack's on the other end (in faceplates that also have a phone jack wired up).

It also looks like the original builders used A wiring and basement finishing used mostly B but some A. Fml. That is unnecessarily annoying.

So cables from main part of the house and cables from basement finishing can't possibly reach the same location. Need to install two switches 3' apart and then wire them together (or one set to punchdown and then jumpers but that's a pain and I don't care about a little latency between upstairs and down). I guess it was slightly better than pulling cable but damn, zero pride in their work.

EBay, if you get a non North American models you have more frequencies.

I just installed TP link deco x60 mesh wifi system for a client and it was so easy.

You must download a tp link app to set it up/use it and sign up for a account... Soo I am suspicious what kind of data the app is mining but it was super fast..

Ordered microtik from a gta distributor. Said international version, got us version. Powerful but nuts in a vise setup for normal people. They definitely target it pros. Ubiquiti is still out of stock on everything I need for ap's.

Nice!!!

Ubiquiti AP's finally came back in stock. Ordered last night and they were delivered today. On the downside, the 802.3at PoE switch is still out of stock so I can't power the bastard things up. AP's are out of stock again. You have to buy within minutes of notification. That was the first stock I've seen since March.

Decided not to wait for the switch I wanted and bought one I could get. Switch now installed in attic and first AP installed. Reasonably painless setup. In the office, signal from router is 20 dB stronger than AP even though it is further away and goes through more walls. Second AP will go outside on the soffit so installation of that one will wait for better weather (wifi in backward sucked and that will also boost our bedroom where it was marginal but I didn't want an AP on the ceiling in the bedroom). Tried feeding the wire down while I was in the attic. Hopefully it is visible once I drop the soffit (it needs to come down anyway to get a backing plate on top to support AP).

AP's are U6-LR's and switch I ended up with is a US-8-150W. Switch runs pretty warm. Lots of power budget left in case I decide on more AP's or want to run cameras. The majority of cameras are white, soffit is black so it takes a while to find cameras that I like at a price I am willing to pay.

EDIT:
Second AP is installed. Theoretically IP54 rated. Installed outside under eave. We'll see how it holds up. Devices roam back and forth between two AP's seamlessly. I left router on a different SSID so I can manually pick whether to go straight to router or use AP's. Not ideal for roaming but I don't know how well different manufacturers will play with auto-roam. I may set thresholds to kick devices if signal gets bad and they should automatically transfer to other network. S20FE phones are connecting to AP's with wifi6. Only have 1G uplink setup so I doubt I will see a speed difference.

Switch is running at 65C which is pretty warm. No fans, tons of available airflow for passive ventilation.
