why so much hate for tow truck drivers?

I was charged with stunt driving(50km. over on the 401) and it cost me $1200 for the tow and 7 day impound. The thing that really got me was the towing company kept insisting that I pay cash because the couldn't take visa or debit at the impound yard on a weekend. What a load of BS.They can take Visa or debit at the side of a road but not at their main office?I'm sure they wanted to pocket the money. When I called the OPP to tell them what their "authorized" towing company was up to,they couldn't care less.
well lets see Barrie Tow Companies charge $400 for a 7 day impound, VS the $1300 for one week in Bolton when i was charged with stunt driving!

People. Wake up.

I've said it before. I will say it again.

If your car is impounded for whatever reason, or is being stored by a tow company.

DO NOT PAY THEIR FEES TO THEM.

Simple go, and ask for an invoice. They must provide one. (If they do not, scribble it down on a piece of paper and have them initial/sign and date it). They need to break down each individual charge.
Go to a court house. Any court house. Go to the small claims desk, and tell them you wish to pay some funds into court under the Repair and Storage liens act.
They will give you two copies of the receipt. one for you, the other for the tow company.
Go back to the tow company and hand them their copy. They must then release your vehicle immediately as the debt has been satisfied. If they fail to do so, call the police and have them help you.

Be nice during the whole process, it makes it go more smoothly. Tell them, can I have an invoice please? I need it to get the money from my mom/dad/spouse etc. Then go get your receipt. The invoice is key so they do not do the switch-a-roo pricing on you.

If they do not sue you in (I believe) 30 days time, then the courts refund your money to you. The tow company is still entitled to sue after the fact, but the held money is released by the courts.

Good luck.

As i was going through this thread one thing came to my mind, why do cops close the road for several hours after a fatal accident? From where i come from it takes about an hour to 2 hours after the crash to investigate the place of the crash, measure the braking distance and get all the necessary information to define who was at fault and how the accident happened. I' ve been in Canada for couple years and seen highways closed completely for several hours. Anyone can explain?

No expert on the subject, but although it seems like it should only take an hour or two to do the investigation I think that it takes longer due to the level of detail required thanks our litigation happy society and insurance companys.

Litigation and insurance has little to do with it. Serious crashes involving serious injury or death are treated as potential crime scenes. Data is collected to determine criminal and civil culpability, and also to advance the sciences leading to safer vehicle and road systems. The goal is to determine exactly what happened, and how to avoid it happening again in future.

I'm curious as to where it is that you're from.
