why is Freight on new cars ridiculously priced?

you could file a grievance with UCDA or OMVIC.

That's a shady move, and they are suppose to care about consumer confidence

If I did it would be about many more things although that one would be easier to prove than some of the others.

if you can't prove it maybe they can prove something else.

When they investigate they'll look at everything. Not just stuff related to you.

I guess this is the latest way to scam new car buyers?

an eye popping $1800+ for "freight and PDI". for a car shipped from a US factory. The same car in the US only has $790 freight charge.

Back in 2012, when I bought a canadian made vehicle, the freight charge was $1200 to bring the car from the factory in Alliston, to the Toronto dealership I bought from. I offered the dealer for me to go the factory to pick it up myself, and drive it to the dealer and save the retarded costs (there is no way it costs $1200 to ship a car within the province), but they wouldn't have none of it.

Like good canadians, we just shut up and pay. Never question. Shame.

$1800 in Canada vs. $790 in the USA... Mazda comes to mind (not sure if that's what you are looking at, but I am). And the cars are made in Japan. And no, volume cannot explain it.

It just sucks.

Freight is a flat rate charge by the manufacturer. It's not a dealer charge.

It is not a dealer charge, but somebody was telling me that there is profit margin for the dealer within freight and PDI. Example: Customer pays $1,800, and the dealer keeps $800 and passes the rest to the manufacturer (obviously the dealer has to keep some of that money because of the labour charged for preparation, but according to this person it goes well beyond that).

It sounds like an urban legend, and no dealer will ever accept to it. But it may be true.

As mentioned above only negotiate using the out the door price. Use carfax or any other company that gives you accurate car pricing, add in the suggested profit for the dealer (varies by region and by car model etc, look around on the internet) then email that price as an out the door price (add your tax etc) to all dealers in 100kms stating the model you want with trim etc and see who bites. Near the end of the month is good for quotas.

I did this years ago for my ford escape, I ended up getting a demo version of the top of the line model with full new car warranty for the price of the car several lower down on the trim scale and with a healthy discount on top. I did get offers at my asking price from other dealers too.

If you do it this way you have the upper hand as you refuse to play into their negotiating game.

Still doesn't explain whats up with retarded freight prices and why Canadians have to pay an extra $1000 than our US friends for the same vehicle. It just tells me that its now "built in" to the final price.

Then people wonder why everybody buys cars in the US and brings them back.

If you think about it, it's our own fault. As consumers we have a lot more bargaining power than we think. Why is a Prius 10K more in Canada? Because we will pay it, and they sell every one of them allocated to Canada. Same goes for a lot of other models, products etc. Somewhere along the line some marketing gurus said yep, Canadians will pay more. See it every day.

I was in one of the meetings where that is exactly what was said. Marketing wanted lower prices to support our Canadian distributors, but the boss of course wanted more money.

Spend your hard earned money anyway you see fit. The Internet has equalized a lot. We get screwed that's for sure.

todays comedy....

went to M-B to look at a new Sprinter..... Freight, $3000

They charge it, because people are dumb enough to pay it.

Get back to us when you find a new car without freight
