Why DVP so busy these last few days??

Hi All,

I am a longtime commuter taking DVP from 401 down to Richmond. This week I've noticed it takes roughly 2x as long, almost 1 hour. I haven't seen any accidents or construction. Does anybody have any idea why this is the case? I'm riding a GSXR600 and it gets HOT! The seat and where my knees rest against the body gets extremely hot. I just hope its not like this all the time going forward...

Thanks.

DVP is always a bottle neck.. going out of DVP north people are stupid to be on the far left to then move right to take 401. Going South is slow because people coming in from 401 and 404 all hit this tiny highway and have to slow down. Suggestion from my point of view, always ride the far left lane going north or south and keep in mind that your bike cools of by moving and if you get stock in traffic your bike is not venting the heat well, I would say normal..

You're kidding right? DVP has been a 24-hour traffic jam for at least the last 12 years.

I agree with OP, I take the DVP every day and this week was out of the norm. Leaving at the same time last week I would arrive at Bay and Adelaide around 8:15am, this week was arriving around 8:45 and later. My theory is because it was a short week more people decided to drive down or something.

OP, are you on the blue gixxer?

Skip the DVP altogether, cuz it's never going to get better. If you can get yourself down to the Bayview Extension, it's a much faster way of getting to the bottom of the city.

the extension or even taking bayview or yonge to mt. pleasant and down to the core would be faster than an hour.

the dvp has had the nickname of don valley parking lot for as long as i can remember. . .

I used to take DVP sth from Eglington to Don Mills. Usually pretty good over the summer. Today I actually took it up from Dundas East to 401.. flew up it. Even a cop flew by me at 120+ . It slowed down nth bound at Lawrence but was pretty good still.

hang in there! .. once school lets out for the kids for summer break, July and August will be a breeze!
Do you have the option to start work @ 7AM and leave @ 3PM?

I take it down all the way from Richmond Hill, takes about 50 minutes to the Richmond exit. I'm also on a Gxrr600, original blue and white.

It must be a sign of summer ;)

I have noticed this too, more traffic and it lasts later than usual this season.think it was tuesday... there was medium traffic @ 10pm. I will skip dvp at peak hours and just take don mills, you can fly up or down in the hov lane alot faster without breaking any speeding laws.

can you ride your bike in HOV too?
:lmao:he is talking about the Don mills HOV lanes not the HOV on the highway as mentioned by RetroGrouch, but yes you can ride/fly or both!

probably should have clarified this, yes don mills hov lanes. you couldn't pay me to use the go lane south of the 401 on dvp, er sorrry i mean the paved left shoulder go buses use to cut past traffic for 1 exit...

north of 401 on 404, i don't understand why we can't use the hov lane, all across the city its ok for bikes and taxis.....

According to the MTO website it is not legal to ride in HOV lanes on ANY highways in Ontario on a motorcycle unless you have a passenger.

http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/traveller/hov/

midway down the page:
Which vehicles are NOT allowed to use HOV lanes?

  • A vehicle with only the driver
  • Motorcycles with only the driver

Going southbound on the 404 in the morning from Steeles, it's better to actually take the 401 exit and just stay on the left to go to the DVP as there's a bottle neck south of shepherd to where all the cars merge.

Even if you have a passenger, the HOV lane ends up coming to a standstill most mornings, and taking this route saves you a minute or 5. google map link
