Why do 95% of you drive into parking spots instead of backing in? (Cars or trucks)

Hmm. Wife and I have owned every type of car except an SUV and both of us ALWAYS back in. We shop at Costco and lots of other places and have never had trouble putting stuff in the back.

Its interesting to read about justifying laziness.

I have no problems backing out of a spot it takes less time than it does to back it in. I can see everything (hatchback) and never once had a close call. I hate people who back in because they usually don't signal and hold up traffic, or another car is close to them and have to back up too to get out of their way.

Also, much easier to load things into your trunk when you front in.

Totally different driving something like a truck. Since I back in nearly every time, it's literally a matter of swooping the front end out, putting it in reverse and backing up...
nobody should be so close to me that I can't back up. That's just a dickwad move. People should be able to read what someone is trying to do when they are going to back in.

Similar to people parellel parking. It takes them longer to do it when traffic won't stop and continue to go around now they have to worry about their front end bein torn off by some impatient a-hole while they back their car in.

Im usually not the most patient guy on the road. I hate those people that f the dog, but some times you just gotta give people a bit of space.

Force of habit to back in everywhere I go. My truck has sensors which makes it simple. Anyone who is military usually does this because we have to back in our vehicles every time. Do this with some of the massive trucks our forces has and you'll never have any trouble backing in anything. It's all about using your mirrors.

I always back it in, unless I need easy access to the trunk at places like Costco or getting groceries...

+1 Usually when I'm driving my truck in the city it's because I need to pick something up; groceries, lumber, etc. Why would I back-in giving me zero access to the bed of my truck?

Sounds like rmedic does too much Sunday driving in his truck :P

My Sunday driving is towing the trailer home from the track :p
i usually just park at the back of the lot anyways. But, if I have to park in between cars I just back up. Groceries get put in the back seat. If I'm picking up lumber then I'm at the lumber yard, not home depot so I'm right next to the stack of whatever I'm getting anyways.

Backing out of a spot with my truck, I have to watch to see if there are cars blocked by my bed that I can't see, and worry about the front swinging too much... I can do it, it's just slower than backing in.

I typically look for corner spots, and just go in forwards as it is easier to hug the curb/line on the one side. I also tend to park near the back of lots, so there are many open spaces, and a lot of times I'll just pull through or drive out straight when I leave. With that said, I always back in at my condo, otherwise I'd be 90% out before I could see if anything was coming the other way (I'm next to a wall on 1 side).

With the bike, I always back it in and pull straight out, or walk it out so I can just hop on and ride away. Don't really have the option of duck-walking/paddle-walking it, as I can't flat foot, so I prefer to do any backing up off the bike.

Then again, most people here can't pull into a spot and stay inside the lines.

Maybe, there's an oppotunity to teach people to perpendicular park for huge buckets of cash?

I know it is faster driving in, but you lose that time later. For me, I've always found it to be safer and easier to back in because:

  • I know nothing is behind me
  • I don't have to think as much about my front end swing
  • It is easier to drive out of the spot as it is easier to see what is coming
So, if you are one of the people that always drives into parking spots, why? Is there some advantage to driving in that I am missing?

95%?

You know 72% of stats are made up. The other 33% are poorly researched so hold no real validity. There's only 8% which are truly accurate.

I was once asked, by an Asian lady, to reverse her car out of her spot as she couldn't do it. Apparently when she parked there wasn't anyone next to her. Now there was and she couldn't get out of her spot. Baggsy nails it ^^^^^^^^^^

Because I can back out just as fast and I don't care either way?

I prefer to drive in because parts are a lot more expensive for the front end of a vehicle than the rear. If someone hits me and takes off when I'm not there, I don't have insurance for that.

So i'm a lazy inexperienced driver because i dont back my car up?

Get off your high horse please...

I drove all sorts of heavy equipment at the airport around multi million dollar aircraft. We regularly had to park our vans within INCHES of aircraft fuselages and engines so dont call me a bad driver because i choose not to back in. Ever back up an aircraft pushing it backwards by the nose wheel where you have not one swing but two swing points....any idea how much skill that takes? Its the same as backing up a B-train....ask Truck drivers how hard that is...

Why i dont back in? Just to piss off people who cant mind their own damn business...oh and so i can have access to my hatch....

Pompous Self-righteousness is strong today at GTAM....

I don't back in my bike cuz that way I have room to open the trunk! .. :lmao:thank you Red_liner :)

In Alberta you'll find most parking lots have sign telling you not to back in. But that's because vehicles don't have license plate on the front of the vehicle or maybe there's another reason I don't know.

Besides the backing in part is not so hard it's aligning the vehicle to be as close to the middle of the parking spot where most people have trouble. Rather people go head first dead center of their parking spot than fudgly around their parking spot making door dents and possibly taking up 2 spaces.

Depending on where in Alberta or other cold climate areas, it's for the winter and to plug-in your block/battery heater in.

Shopping? I pull in. Most other places, I back in. Drive way? it's a coin toss. My neighbour is a fireman, both vehicles are backed in. He's the only one that does it 100% of the time. I don't even know what the back of his vehicles look like.
