Read up on the front forks of the 2016-2018 africa twin. Internal hard coating is wearing out in 2-3000km, wearing the inner fork legs and causing pretty bad stiction. Honda is turning its head, refusing a recall.

That would be pretty bad recall for Honda. A complete fork housing redesign and replacement of 100% of the installed fleet is damned expensive. Manufacturers don't like doing a recall where they have to touch a large percentage of the fleet, yet alone one that requires a ton of time and expensive parts. Screw safety, go for profit. I wonder if Honda and Boeing share board members?

As far as I can tell, they've quietly changed parts numbers as of 2019. Some riders are reporting full fork replacement at the dealer, others are being shown the door. Zero real guidance or support from Honda Canada or Us or Europe.

The hell was he thinking taking an Adventure bike out... Adventuring...?!?!

Should have brought the Burgman.

Or a trials bike with a rimlock.

Or a Honda Civic Type R.

Not as much to do with being a SSSA than it is being a Paralever Rear Suspension, which is found mainly on the boxer twin BMWs.

This allows the shaft drive to swing up and down on the swingarm. Paralever has its benefits, but like everything German, it's overly-complex and when it breaks, it's both spectacular and expensive.

I think they're okay off road if you keep the weight down
if you go to the Motorrad site and look at the GSA
all of the off road pics are solo rider and no luggage
and that poor lad doesn't look like a disciple of the Mediterranian Diet
 
The only advantage, other than the aesthetic, to a single sided swing arm is to an endurance racer, making rear tire changes faster... and quick change axles and rear brakes have made them obsolete.
For everyone else it adds cost, complexity and weight.
