Who burns? ... Wood that is.

I go through 2 face chords over the winter, have a wood insert with blower fan. Raises the temps in my downstairs living space to 22-23 with the rest of the house at 19. I don't depend on it but it sure is pleasant.

I love the smell of burning wood!

Used to live in a house with wood burning furnace. Worked in an office, smelled like a camp fire, and not just a little. Was a fair sized house and quite a bit of work with the wood all the time. I don't miss it, but I would LOVE to have a wood burning fireplace! Even the sound...

Yeah me too. Deep down I'm probably a pyromaniac. I love camp fires & burning stuff. Fires are so entertaining.

I also love the smell & taste of smoked fish lol

I burn wood at home, but outside. Bought one of these pellet grill critters this past summer. I absolutely positively LOVE the thing despite it costing a small fortune, but for someone who's a serious griller or smoker it's a great investment, and it's built like a tank so it's going to be a grill I'm still going to be using in a decade vs many of the 2-3 season "disposable" BBQ's that are so common now.

Here's one of my threads over at SmokingMeatForums (with lots of pics) about my first big 9# pork butt that was in for an 11 hour smoke and made the best pulled pork I've ever tasted. <drool>

Father in laws a Chimney Sweep and has a hobby farm. He keeps their house heated by wood and still cooks on a wood stove. Holiday's are best walk out to the backyard kill a turkey bring it inside and cook her up!

Wood is the primary heat source at my cottage. We try to use the electric baseboards as little as possible (for obvious reasons).

I'm trying and failing...

Chimney didn't pass inspection last year because needed a liner and repair the cap and some rows of brick.
2 grand being spent on repairs now.
Go shopping for liner now... told insert won't get past inspection either, need new one.
Oy. Quoted 4 grand for a vermont castings insert. Not on my budget.
There's insert at Costco and Lowes for about 1500... but are they crap?

Maybe not this year. I'm about 3 grand away from burning wood. And I have a shed full of it.

We use a wood stove to boil sap for maple syrup season; just got finished stacking a couple cords in our sugar shack in preparation for it!

While in the bush cutting wood we were keeping our eyes peeled for puffballs, but still haven't found any; anyone found puffballs yet this season? I'm hoping its just later than usual...

Burn apple and cherry that we get from some of the orchards nearby. Burns long and hot and makes the place smell great. But, the house isn't set up to efficiently heat on wood alone. So, it's just for ambience. Kids and I love it.

Get a pacific energy insert if you want to burn wood a standard woodstove or fireplace runs anywhere from -10 to 30% efficiency yes some fireplaces are costing you heat while you burn wood due to the poor design. A good modern designed (less than 10 yrs old) insert or wood stove will give you 70-80% efficiency meaning you get the same amount of heat out of 1/3 of the wood or less. The reason for this is that modern units have a reburner that burns the smoke (you will see the secondary flame in the top of the firebox, looks like a gas jet). I used to be able to heat my 1800 sq foot house all winter on 1 cord of wood as the primary heat source.

Everybody loves ambience, whether burning wood or just wood.

We replaced the OLD woodstove at the cottage with a new unit, my brother did not believe me at all when I described the above. He had to see it with his own eyes, only then he was convinced (and seeing virtually no smoke coming out of the chimney).

I'm happy with the wood stove I got from home hardware. I think in 2008 the whole deal cost me 1000$ including wett inspection. It's made by drolet with the reburner. Using one of those laser temp gauges I've measured over 1000f in the firebox. I believe they make inserts too.
