comes with camera, wi-fi, does routes, can even be used as a cell phone if i unlock it.

not waterproof which is a problem

scored one second hand for $70 dollars shipped to replace my garmin nuvi 295w. can't believe it still works after all the times i got it soaked in the rain.

Can it import routes?

i don't know how to import routes. i can however create routes on the unit itself and pick points off the map or install waypoints.

but again, you need to be where there is SOME form of connectivity to a data signal (2G, 3G, 4G/LTE, WiFi, etc).

Standalone is standalone. Unless you download the entire map to your phone (Nokia does this, so do most Androids depending on the program (i.e. Navigon)).

Not if the app downloads and stores the maps.

Smartphones have a GPS chip in them just like standalone units.

I use a hiking gps -- a garmin etrex venture cx which you can get a handle bar mount for another $10 or so and road and topo maps, although illegal, can be had on pirate bay.

What I like about the hiking gps is that it is waterproof and tough, can run a long time on AA batteries if need be, you can turn road lock off, you can get topo maps (latter two more useful when offroad exploring), and it is very easy to upload or download tracks, routes and waypoints using MapSource. With this I have found .gpx tracks that other dual-sporters have uploaded and I am able to use their tracks to find more trails/fun places to ride.

The best thing about the hiking gps's... they are cheap. It should be easy to find some model of etrex for less than $200 for sure, possibly even less than $100 if you are lucky.

Microsoft Streets and Trips, on my home computer. Printouts in my tank bag is my GPS. Or if I am on a long trip, I plan my trip at the hotel and write the directions for the next day on a napkin and put that in my tank bag. In 7 years, I've only taken a wrong turn once and that was a fun ride to catch back up to my route. :D

Running a Legend HCx on a RAM mount.

Waterproof
100% readable in sunlight... Actually it looks better in direct sunlight
Turn by Turn maps
30+ hours on 2 AA batteries
Import Routes not just points
Small
Can be used in the car, bike and for Geocaching.
Blah Blah blah

Does anyone have experience with Garmin Oregon 450 or the eTrex 20 gps units? I was thinking of getting one of these to use on my bike.

I have a Montana 650 which is almost the same as the Oregon. It works great. Only thing is at speed the battery sometimes can come loose and restart the unit. To resolve I just put a paper between the battery and the cover no more issue.

I've been using a Garmin etrex legend for about 4 years now, with a handlebar mount. Totally weatherproof. Smallish display.
I run it off AA batteries but you can wire it up to a power source if you want. You can also download detailed maps into it. The newer versions are still inexpensive.

The bonus is that you can take it off the bike and carry it around hiking. I even put a bar mount on my bicycle so I can use it when I'm pedalling and I take it on vacation so I never get lost. I have some cool tropical waypoints entered into it!.

Check out Radioworld on Steeles/Hwy 400. They have a dedicated scetion for bike GPS.
