Alzheimers, dementia, diabetes, mobility. Not everyone can deal with these issues. Not in a safe way at least.
And changing diapers and feeding administering medications.
Does everyone from the old country have psw/rn qualifications?
Exactly. Everyone thinks it's a great idea to keep mom or pop at home forever until the reality that they can't left dear old dad out of bed to bathe him and change his diapers, and that the 45 minutes they leave the house to go get groceries mom has wandered out of the house in her nightgown and is 4 blocks over trying to get into some else's car because they think it's theirs.
Massive kudos to those who CAN do this, but it takes the right person who can physically and mentally do it.
And reality is a lot of people in these situations but with some level of mental deterioration may sometimes be happier (or at least fare better) in a nursing home where they receive a higher level of care, social interaction with others in their age group, and there's entertainment and enrichment, especially if it's being compared to "OK, you're out of bed, changed, cleaned up and fed, here's the TV remote".
