Rider's Choice if you're looking for high end stuff.
GP Bikes if you're looking for a selection in all different price brackets.
Royal Distributing if you're looking for the cheap(er) stuff.

Since i'm still in a learner stage, i'm not gonna buy high end gear. Probably cheap-midrange. I wont be cheap out on helmet tho.

Any online retailer? maybe from US?

ps. off topic, but i hope just a quick answer, does training course reduce insurance rate? If so any particular school i should look into? I was planning to self learn how to ride.

Riders Choice was a lot cheaper for me than the US.

There are a few good vendors for e-mail, Twisted Throttle is one. The problem with a lot of US dealers is they either don't ship to Canada or they want an outlandish amount to do it. If you do order, specify USPS (postal) not UPS. UPS kills you on brokerage charges.

If you do go e-mail you can't check fit and comfort and it's harder to compare features. Besides if we can get enough people to stop buying local we can lose the few dealers we have left.

You need to try your first set of gear on. Don't waste a shops time and window shop them, so buy at least some of your gear in a brick and mortar.

For your second part, depending on your age, some places won't even insure you if you haven't taken a course.

Go to the dealer forum.

Tyler from Two Wheel has been getting me some great deals on stuff; even cheaper than Royal.

The pavement doesn't care if you're a new rider or not, hurts the same regardless if you've been riding 1 day or 10 years.

Buy the best gear you can afford.

I like Canada Motorcycle

i've done very well on Kiji - best for a learner but get someone experienced to help.
There is all sorts of good gear there from them that bought too much then didn't ride :D
My gain.
i think out of pocket so far is about $400 for 3 1/2 season riding = main cost was Bell Mag8 at $130 ( now $90 if you look ) - $200 for TWO ballistic jackets one with pants which I flipped.
Best deal - my Joe Rocket mesh for $50 - added a liner for $49 and good for 3 seasons.

Gloves...get good ones with some knuckle armor - lots on Kiji
Knee protectors can be had sub $50 for under loose jeans.
Hiking boots or anything with a no-slip sole are fine...

this...

I'm a regular at RC and just went to Royal and GP today; I share these sentiments.

I'd add that if you're looking for anything cruiser related other than some things like heated grips, bulbs, oil etc pass on RC...

Velocity, see the group deals section.

Re: Where do you guy your gear? Recommend me the cheapest local and online retailers.

Kijiji is always a good starting point, people sell barely used gear all the time so why not

motorcyclegear.com is where I get most of my stuff ordered to a US PO Box

Re: Where do you guy your gear? Recommend me the cheapest local and online retailers.

I went to Re-Gear in Oshawa this weekend a motorcycle gear consignment store. Saw their ad on Kijji. Picked up leather pants and two jackets for 400 bucks. Couldn't be happier.
