I have had the little mushroom plugs that are installed from the outside fail, catastrophically, at high speeds. If you look at the fine print, it clearly says that there is both a speed limit and a distance restriction on those style of plugs. They are for a temporary application only, and I will never, ever use them again.
The two high speed blowouts (rear tire, one at 100 kph, the other at about 90 kph) as a result of that tire damaged my tire so badly that the rope and resin style plugs didn't really hold either. I had to double up on them, installing two at once, and had to check my tire pressure every 100 kms on my return trip from James Bay in 2008.
From now on, in my Michelin Road 2's, I will use the rope and resin as an emergency repair, and then the larger mushroom patch applied to the inside of the tire as a more permanent repair.
