When you figure out panniers/luggage is actually awesome

I think if things go the route of needing more storage, I'll be thinking of getting something more suited for sport touring instead of working my little 600 like a donkey ;)
FJR1300 maybe...

I just have a top box and it has never been off the bike since new. It is actually a pelican case bolted to the rack. Work well but I have lots of room and the bike has a factory rack with threaded holes to bolt it to.

Paid enough for my side cases and should use them more as I currently only use them when touring.

I find myself using a waterproof rear bag for most things as I can pack my rain liner, rain gloves and other things I need handy on an all day trip without the bulk and width of the side cases.

What takes them to next level is getting some sidecase liner bags to allow you to take the luggage to your hotel room without lugging the side cases.

Ditto - top load. Easy on and off, weigh nothing and the 3P mounting system is almost invisible with the cases off.
Costs and holds about the same as a top case, keeps the weight low on the bike and looks way better.

just can't do the topcase hanging out the back like that
if the panniers won't hold enough for a trip
I use a waterproof duffle across the pillion seat/top of the panniers
Yup. The top case only goes on when my wife comes for a ride. Otherwise, it's just the side cases around town. I'll add a tank bag and waterproof duffle for overnighters.

The case on the left side contains various tools and equipment (rain gear, tire patch kit, air compressor, ROK straps, first aid, etc.). The right side case, the larger of the two, is for clothes. All the camping gear fits in a 25L duffle (tent, sleeping bag, Thermarest, camping chair, etc.). Snacks, water, hat, spare gloves, phone, and assorted small items in the tank bag.

It's a good set up, works well for me.

PP, it sounds like you've got it all figured out. Swap out your strap on bag for a waterproof roll top bag, and you'll never be concerned with rain again.

surprised no ones mentioned chain lube yet

Any decent amount of distance and you gonna need it(unless you ride Bavarian)
