when did we decide to buy them these???

Ignore the reporter's "BMX bikes" comment...

Nice, meme! Good article.
I kinda like them on Harleys. (The Harleys come up very well in their evaluation criteria.)

This specific question is unanswered since the article is undated.

Amazingly-they even wear hi viz yellow textile gear instead of short sleeved button down shirts too....whooda thunk?

thanks for clearing that up

They want to relate to us sportbike riders. Shouldn't those be S1000's in order for them to do that?

Probably for the photo op look.

What's with them dismounting on the "wrong" side?
Did they mount from the right? If you read the "how to ride like a police officer" thread the op says thats what they teach you in the class. It gives you more space getting on and off since the bars are "open" to you.

They aren't horses. There is no "wrong" side.

Good for them for joining the 20th century (a little late, but what the hell) and wearing protective gear and modular helmets. Now if only other N American services would adopt the same then their spouting about safety wouldn't be so hypocritical.

In the late 80s and early 90s they had BMW K75 and K100 bikes. In the early 80s they tried Kawasaki KZ1000 like most of the USA had. Try Ohio the highway patrol run Busas.

I was told by the dude who trains the cops that you mount/dismount on the high side (right side) for a number of reasons. It keeps you protected from moving traffic if you are pulled over to the side of the road. Also, if you somehow lose control of your bike while getting on/off and its falling, if you're on the lowside you may get pinned. if you are on the highside you will just land on top of it. There were a ton of reasons to do it and generally they relate to real world safety.
