What's with mutts costing big bucks?

The best dog i ever had was an Akita I adopted yrs ago. He was 8 yrs old, and he was fantastic with my kids. I also adopted a rottweiler about 13 yrs ago and she was incredible. I've been very lucky with adoption. My current dog,I got from a member on this forum. I understand the interest Sonny has for bull mastiff, when i was younger, my brother had bull mastiff and Neapolitan Mastiff, absolutely incredible dogs. Adoption is Good route to go.

It's the retards who think a labradoodle is a real breed and pay 2000 bucks for them. So now all the rest of the mutt prices have risen accordingly in the minds of idiot dog buyers who have no clue.
Some guy on kijiji is asking 500 bucks for his "PUREBRED" rotti/mastiff cross... ****ing retard

Generally, I'm all in favour of adoption. My first pet was a pure-bred German shep and she was a great pet, loving with us, protective of us, but didn't really trust strangers. Fortunately, I've also been exposed to mutts from a very young age as my dad's cottage-neighbor adopted this half-German shep, half-whatever mutt named Buck. The smartest animal I've ever met. Friendly, could play with us for hours, but if you sent him to get water, he pick up the gallon can, fill it up at the spring and bring it back to the kitchen (no joke).

I am all for adopting as well but they dont make it easy for a dog lover. Perhaps it has changed since it has been many years since I attempted to adapt but the shelters near me either had no dogs or were breeds that I was not interested in (since I had young kids at the time, I wont bother naming breeds). The shelters that had dogs that I wanted were 'out of my area' and would not let me adopt. Example...a beautiful dog I saw in the Stoney Creek shelter while with a friend. I dont live in the Hamilton area so I was not allowed to adopt it.

As I said, maybe this policy has changed but if not I would imagine there are a lot of animals that could be adopted that arent.

Not all shelters are like that...I'm in Ottawa and I adopted dogs from Cornwall

I adopted my Rotti, from Brampton animal shelter, and I lived in Courtice.

I've e-mailed these "breeders" on Kijiji asking over a grand for a mixed pup and told them what I thought about their mutts and stupidity on their part or on anyone else that would buy them.

I believe its our civic duty to email every idiot with one of these ads for mutts. Maybe if they get enough emails they wont breed again

Aren't mutts better given the genetic flaws that occur in purebreeds (inbreeds) now?

I know that's not the point of the thread.... just curious. I have never owned a dog. Since I'm single and gone all the time I don't think it's fair to abandon them like that.

I want a Czech wolfdog when I retire. Either Gray wolf/ German Sheppard or a GW/ Alaskan Malmute.

If that worked, we would be emailing all the idiot parents in the world, so they wouldn't breed again ;-P

I like Dobermans myself. But I see why people like bullmastiffs

You should go to every PJs pet store and let them know too!

Yes and no. A good breeder will breed out all the genetic defects as much as possible. A bad breeder will just breed for profit.

Not with papers and CKC registration I'm betting. So no you bought a 250 dollar mutt

Quebec is also the puppy mill centre of Canada. Thre were at least three or four huge busts of puppy mills over the summer from Quebec. Sorry to say but a purebred dog is not cheap....if it is something is wrong.

Like another poster, I also did the foster program for a while. It was through the Toronto Humane Society. Rather than take dogs that could be adopted out, I took in dogs who needed a warm bed and TLC until it was time to die. Yup I was palliative care. Incredibly heartwarming to say the least.

Apart from 1 purebred dog in years gone by, all my critters have been adoptions/rescues. Had some quadro-peds that I would kill for, better than a best friend. Right now I have Tucker Black, a 6 yr old rescue cat from Hollywood and wouldn't trade him for anything. Now I have to find a doggie to keep him company while I am working.
