What's with mutts costing big bucks?

It's the retards who think a labradoodle is a real breed and pay 2000 bucks for them. So now all the rest of the mutt prices have risen accordingly in the minds of idiot dog buyers who have no clue.

Never understood buying a dog, with so many locked up in shelters looking for good homes

For me it's because I love bullmastiffs, can go to the breeder, meet the father , mother etc. see what personality I'm going to get and then have sweet, behaved, even tempered dogs who enhance my life and don't make it stressful. The 2 times i tried the pound the dogs were horrible. There are good dogs from shelters but it's a gamble

Do shelters let you take dogs out for walks or for like a day or two? How long do you need to spend with a dog to figure em out?

You would need a day or two if it's over 18 months or so, if its a puppy you would need longer obviously. You could adopt one and take it back but I think that's really crappy to do. On the other hand , just like children , friends and relationships, many people will put up with things from dogs I would never tolerate, so a dog you might like I wouldn't necessarily want.

Cant you discipline/train most of the traits out?

Nope. You can't train temperment. A breed is what it is. You can train for obedience only and some dogs take to it faster than others and some don't at all. Just like horses or people. Temperment is temperment. That's why I love the bullmastiffs. They do what you want to do, they are also calm and don't bark usually ever. They want nothing more than to be by your side and obey . Even when they are pups they sleep all night generally and don't mess in their crate. I have had 5 of them and they were the same with only different personalities but the same base temperment was there in all. I love and respect the breed so much all my bullmastiffs that passed away are tatooed on my forearm, it's my avatar.

Yes and no. It depends what exactly you're talking about. I have a Coonhound and an American Cocker Spaniel. The hound is pretty lazy, but will run and play. The spaniel will chase animals and bark at them. Both those things are what dogs do in mind.

You can't train out or train in temperment. Period.

i want to shoot everyone person that talks about their pure-bred "labradoodle" or "Lhasa Poo"

i dont care if the cross-blend makes a positive traited dog, its still a mix, and is not special.

Well every "pure bred" started as a mix.

Sorry, I read temperament as being personality. So you could beat the living crap out of a dog to change its temperament/personality, but I don't think that's what you want.

you can find ANY breed of cat/dog in shelters/rescue groups, though they may not be young puppies. In my experience, and I volunteer at etobicoke humane society and have fostered for Mississauga humane society, the animals just need TLC.

Almost all of the cats I've seen (and its hundreds) are VERY friendly and nice. The dogs may have a few bad habits though from previous owners which is unfortunate (not toilet trained, etc.). I've worked with great dogs though, even the medium sized ones who at first I thought were loud yapmouths, when they get used to you, just adore you.

You can offer to foster dogs (you can say yes or no to the dogs they ask you) and they will pay for all the food/etc. If you end up liking the dog then just adopt him (if nobody else does). Of course these are usually older dogs, but for me I don't mind because I love large dogs.

No , you can't change a breeds temperment. You misread what i was saying. Temperment and personality are 2 different things

All our pets have come from rescues......some have had problems and cost us a fair bit of cash but we knew that was a risk going in. They have all been amazing pets though and if theres one thing I have learned about adopting animals its that many of the problems an animal has can be traced back to the owner. If you have patience you can train most dogs in some way. The dogs we currently have cost me a big adoption fee from the rescue but I didn't mind as I saw where the cash was going when I was there. They had just rescued a ton of animals from a puppy mill, the same puppy mill where the two pups I have now would have been. I like pure breeds, always wanted an english bulldog or a dogue de bordeaux but then I wander around a shelter and see who needs a home. The pups I have now are amazing, everyone thinks they are from a breeder, they have fantastic temperaments. Unfortunately one has some problems that I wrote about in the other thread but we'll fix him up right too and he'll be fine I'm sure. I would never buy a cockadoodle or a labrapoo or whatever because the shelters are full of mutts like these, there's a fair few pure breeds in shelters too which people don't realise.

My dog was pretty cheap, got her from a shelter for $150....She was rescued after being used as a test dog for vets, she was sooo skinny at the time her ribs were showing. She is a mutt (half german sheppard/half husky). She is the sweetest dog to people, loves everyone but towards other dogs she gets very vicious and attacks...not sure why and don't know if it has anything to do with what could have happened to her in the past. But regardless no regrets and love her to death. I wish more people would adopt from shelters..there are so many animals being put down all the time just because no one wants them...it's terrible :(
