What's the etiquette?

Ok, generally I will fall into staggered if it's safe. i.e. behind him or her in the opposite track but I will admit there was ONE time where I was behind a guy on a cruiser at light, in the opposite track and at first I stopped behind him but then I ended up coming up beside him because we were waiting at the light FOREVER and I thought maybe his bike wasn't triggering the sensor lines on the road, so I rode up to hit the sensor line on the other side hoping to trigger the light. I guess I should be glad he didn't pull out his gun and shoot me.

Proper blocking position for 2 riders is same track, following riding behind the leader by a few seconds.
Riding staggered with 2 riders is incorrect form. You need at least 3 for staggered position.

I should add the reason I prefer staggered is because I can keep a better eye on them in my mirror

:D Had someone pull up to me quite a few times now, as long as you don't cause me to endanger myself I let it go. It isn't worth my time to get all riled up about, not that i won't call you a jerk in my helmet if you use me as a way to get ahead.

So I rode my bike in to work for the first time today, (bought my GS 500F 2 saturday's ago), and a rider in a red ninja was riding in the same direction.

This is a noob question, but what's the etiquette to ride together when you see another bike on the road???

the etiquette is you don't.

Dayuuummmm... I could have got my self killed, or worse, MY BIKE KICKED OVER!!!

Thanks for the info GTAM!

Bottom line is different people have different reactions, just like any social scenario. And just like said other scenarios, if you don't know the person don't enter his/her bubble.

Op best thing to do is either stop behind them but bump you front tire into their rear gently. It just lets them know you are there. If its a long light you can also put your bike on its kick stand walk over to them and sit on their passager seat and give them a great big hug.

LOL!!! ^^^ THIS !!! ^^^
When I need more road to myself I work it out so I'm the guy coming up on the right of your space at the red light. Look directly at the other rider through my visor. Give a big friendly wave with my hand at shoulder height and keep staring - wave again in five seconds. Most people, that weirds them out enough they have to get off the road for a break.

Oh maybe I should have done this instead of moving up and trying to trigger the sensor. Thanks for the good advice! :D

And on that note...where are ya gonna be ridin' tonight :agave:

This is NOT a noob question.....the problem is , there are very few riders on the road.Naturally, if you see one there'll be a tendency to come up and say "hi". Best to let them know by body language ( middle finger is NOT what I'm referring to!)

Never pull up beside me...I'll kick your bike over. That's the mentality I respect so I would never do it, so I expect the same from anyone...unless of course it's a buddy I'm ridin with or I might know you...even then...

WOW! been to the "group ride" section lately?

100% what I was going to say. Even if you know the other rider and you're riding together, you don't stagger. 2 is not a group, and it leaves #2 vulnerable and doesn't do a thing for #1 either. Just stay in your tire track at a normal following distance.

I had someone that I rode with that always wanted to share my lane with me and I hated it. I told them I hated it, and told them why I hated it and that I don't trust anyone's skill, especially someone with lack of it. Eventually I just stopped riding with them.

I've pulled up beside the odd person at a light, but usually it's if they have a cool bike and I'm checking it out. It doesn't bother me if someone else does it, as long as when it goes green, they fall back in line.

I was at a lift bridge about a month ago that was lifting when I pulled in behind a guy on a cruiser, so I pulled up beside him since it was a long wait and we chatted for a bit.

I've had plenty of bikers move up beside me at red lights, they usually split up to the front when traffic is stopped. I don't mind it at all, so long as they understand that the person who was there first should go first on the green.
I also don't mind if someone wants to tag along while I'm riding, which actually happens failry often. When it does happen I just continue on at my own pace and pretty much all bikers follow along courteously or simply pass me.

I have yet to be in a situation where anothers bikers actions anger me or even put me in danger. I'm always cheerful and alert when I ride anyways.

If I see another rider in front I'll stay behind them....I was at a red light once in the left tire track and another bike coming from behind pulls up beside me at the red light in the right tire track then when the light turned green he went first like an idiot...sooo don't do that.

You put your finger up his *** and get a tow....the etiquette is most powerful bike tows the least powerful bike.....be wary of guys riding Busas.

Let me know how this works for you after breaking their solo seat cover and burning your leg on the high mount exhaust. :D

i personally dont mind if some one rolls up beside me when i am stopped at the lights. i always have a chit chat.. i also have rolled up beside another rider and talked to them. i have not had a bad experience yet.

i think it comes down to the person . some people arent as friendly and thats fine.
