What's the etiquette?

So I rode my bike in to work for the first time today, (bought my GS 500F 2 saturday's ago), and a rider in a red ninja was riding in the same direction.

This is a noob question, but what's the etiquette to ride together when you see another bike on the road???

Unless they invite you to its not approrpiate to just join them. I know i would not want some random who i dont know pulling beside me at a stop sign. The whole lane belongs to the rider. However i guess it depends someone people might be cool with it.

behind him a second or two and in the opposite tire track

Personally, I wouldn't mind at all if someone pulled up behind me and rode staggered with me. I would prefer it over them riding directly behind me.

I've seen it before where instead off riding 1 second behind in opposite tire track, they would ride 2-3 seconds behind in the same tire track. Made me uneasy, so I just changed lanes and moved away lok

Since you are new to riding, best to follow a safe course. If you are leading keep your blocking position given the situation, the other rider will either pass in the other lane or if he's right behind you pull in staggered. If you are behind do the same, don't pull up beside them at a stop unless they indicate to pull up (likely to chat and say hi). As mentioned by Two50noob the lane is yours beside you (while you are still new) and you should consider that the case for other riders as well.

Most importantly your safety is the most important regardless of etiquette/coolness/etc. Do the things that will keep you safe and others around you aware of you. Ride safe.

This. God help you if you pull up next to The Road Warrior. He'll stab you for it and ride off into the sunset.

I hang back a couple seconds and ride staggered unless it's heavy traffic, In which case I just take up whatever blocking position the other rider isn't using.

I had a squid on gixxer with douchevest pull up beside me on a red light in right tire track. Just figured he was checking out the duc and we nodded heads. At green light he passes me only to make a right turn at next intersection. What a D**K
I hate that

On the plus side OP if someone pulls up beside you stab them and ride away!

:p

nope. thats not proper blocking pstn.

couple seconds back, same track/

group riding is different than solo riding... you want to be staggered, not lined up

EDIT: NealT, absolutely they are guidelines... I don't always stay in the opposite tire tract, I'll move around if I feel unsafe where I am, but in general you want to be staggered

+1 yup... staggered doesn't always mean lead in block and the only other rider(2 rider scenario) on the right behind as it leaves that rider exposed.
As you get more experience you will see that many of these "rules" are general guidelines meant to get you into good reflexive riding habits first. Once you are good with these then bend the guidelines to suit the situation such that you are as safe as possible.

I've lost count of the number of times another rider will pull up in my lane while at a stop.

I even had a rider use my lane and pass me on the QEW. he kept on riding.

If I come up behind you, I'll follow you in the same manner I follow any other vehicle - 2 seconds behind and in whatever part of the lane is best for me. I am not riding with you. I don't know you and we aren't riding together. I've had people motion for me to move up into staggered formation with them. No thanks. Again, I don't know you and I don't trust your riding and I'm not gonna compromise my safety so we can be road buddies.

If you come up on me from behind I expect the same. I don't want you 1 second back in staggered, that's where people I know and trust ride. If you position yourself there I do what I do for any vehicle that's following me too closely. You ride your ride, I'll ride mine.

This crap makes me very angry. Only happened to me a couple of times and usually some squid. It's my lane, whether I'm moving or not. Stay the hell out of it. I was blocked from turning right once by some goof pulling up alongside me on my right cause he wanted to be friendly or some damn thing.

ya it happened to me today. in the morning waiting to turn left from sheppard onto bayview, a dude was behind me. he was like 1 second behind in a staggered position. i like that.

lol! at least he was trying to be friendly lol! it's marginally better than some ********* who just doesnt give a damn about u and acts like the lane belongs to him.

Just keep in mind that if you're riding in staggered with a 1 sec following distance, you're presuming that you are comfortable with each other's skills and riding style and that you have well understood signalling worked out so that you don't get yourselves into trouble. If not, you've just added a large risk to your ride because you have someone that you don't know and that doesn't know you following too closely to react.

That's the way I look at it too.

Sorry tricky wasn't referencing you, just the op since he is so new to riding and being in traffic and amongst other riders.

Never pull up beside me...I'll kick your bike over. That's the mentality I respect so I would never do it, so I expect the same from anyone...unless of course it's a buddy I'm ridin with or I might know you...even then...
