So admittedly I don't watch the news. I recently heard of this new hashtag and am wondering wtf.

What catalyzed this? It's not like a small minority haven't been racist against Asians for as long as I've been in Canada. And I know Coronavirus ramped up the intolerance with anyone that looks remotely Chinese (RIP Filipino, Viet, Korean, Japanese, Taiwanese, Hong Kong, Singaporean, Malaysian, and any other I missed lol), but was there a single event that catalyzed the movement similar to George Floyd?

Serious question. I'm not Googling this one because it's too close to home and may incite some rage lol; media outlets love to sensationalize this **** and twist/turn everything into rage/despair (looking at the BLM stuff from yesteryear.)

We (Asian Minority) got shot at because of China Virus (COVID)

Try Guys (Eugene) did a big video recently about the above too

Is this triggering af? lol I didn't know we got shot at due to COVID.

I like Morgan Freeman's take on racism.
"Stop talking about it, and it will go away".

We don't tend to talk about this. I can stereotypically speak on behalf of most Asians; our cultures emphasize on not sticking out. We have some exceptions, like myself being a really black sheep lol, but we generally haven't talked about it. So why now? =/

I can say first hand that it’s happening, sickening to see when people are so overwhelmed by news outlets that they react to ********

I don’t get my back up very often but when you **** with my family you’re ****** with me.

Bro, I watched the first minute and had to stop it.

I haven't encountered an open racist for almost a decade. I hope someone is stupid enough to try this **** on me or my family; I have rage issues that need an outlet.

Since I don’t recall Americans being attacked over swine flu that came from a US state this is a sad excuse for racists to have a go at their favourite targets under cover of a “social movement”.

I don’t know any intelligent people that have any animosity towards the Asian population over COVID just saying.

I don't either. I'm lucky to be surrounded by a very multicultural group of close friends where we'd appear racist to outsiders because our conversations involve insulting each other's stereotypes.

But I had a hunch that COVID would've spiked racism, and still believe that some anti maskers are inherently racist due to mask association with Asians and not wanting to be like the enemy. No proof behind that, just a gut feeling.

EDIT: @george__ ****, I can't turn that video off now LMAO. I didn't know about the 442nd...
I like how 80 years later, our true stereotypes (not Western influenced) have not changed: near inhuman willpower, and death before failure.

Colonialism probably had a lot to do with it. The British Empire expanding in about 1870.
Edit: if this thread goes even lightly off the rails, it will be locked and offenders will be dealt with harshly.

You mean when they decided to tell everyone to believe in God with a bible one hand and gun in the other? lol

I'd greatly appreciate if you don't lock this btw; it's a heated topic and **** happens when stuff is heated. Asian-hate/racism isn't something we, as a society, have openly talked about. I'm sure @george__ and other Asians will understand the stereotypical attitude we've held, which was "it is what it is, accept it and just work around it."

So how many of us have watched our parents take racism? Because I have, and it was very painful being powerless.

It was also only in the last 5 years where I stopped hating my ethnicity. Imagine telling your parents "**** learning Chinese, I keep getting made fun of for it." Pretty sure I was 7 or 8 at the time.

GTAM. Do you remember what the M stands for?

Yeah, it's off topic.

We've also had a host of BLM, COVID, and other heated off topic issues here for the last year. Locking this down fast will, in fact, appear quite racist lol

Which if I recall a couple of mods was also heavily involved in the discussions

We have team issues now whereas years ago I thought there was more tolerance to listen to opposing points of view. Now you're either on one team or the other, no grey areas. Sadly these days some of those teams set up by people that used to be in the shadows are team white and team not white and things like COVID and social networks give them more cover to step out into the open.

I'd honestly prefer if "mutt" (think dog mixed breed) friendship groups were more common. The Western world is in a strange state where outside of said "mutt group" I never know what might offend/piss somebody off.

When someone asks my background I always say ‘mutt’. Both my parents are bi racial.
