whats a good helmet?

it is 980 - 21%vat = 855 euro and then you take of the 125 euro (or $180)
people outside europe get 21% vat discount (besides the $180 discount)
several people here bought their pista from championhelmets for this reason

So it would be like.. 855-125 = 730 euro + additional 21% off ontop of that?

no this is what you pay for the pistagp project 46: 980 - 125 (coupon code discount) = 855 - 21%vat = 675,45 euro (or 971 CAD)
obviously CAD depend on the daily eur>cad currency rate, but you can see the price in CAD as well, http://www.championhelmets.com/en/agv-pista-gp-project-46-valentino-rossi-carbon.html

the vat is deing deducted at the check-out process (after you fill in the addres details, the system automatically takes off the vat if you live outside europe)

You still have to pay Tax and Duties. It'll be close to $1200 to your door with 8.5% duties and 13% HST.

Not if you kindly ask them to adjust the value on the shipping documents, if a seller puts a low value on the shipping documents there are no duties or additional costs, ask the other guys here that bought it. so CAD 971 is the total price

This is what confuses me. Because this helmet is not manufactured in North America, do you not have to pay tax on the Canadian Equivalent of the item? I know with duties, it's always a guessing game when you have to pay but I was always under the impression that you always pay HST.

Anytime I order from a European retailer, I always calculate my items this way and I seem to be spot on, if not pretty close to the calculated CAD amount.

Let's take leather pants for example worth 200 euros:

200 x 1.45 (euro to cad) = $290
290 x 1.18 (duties) = 342.20
342.20 x 1.13 = $386.69 to your door.

Even if you request for a lower value on the docs, do you not get dinged on the duties and taxes on that value?

No, what I understand is if the value is under a certain amount (let's say 250$) there are no/barely any duties. Customs base their duties calculation on the shipping documents. Obviously to a certain credible degree, you can play with this if your seller helps you out. When you buy from european retailers did they actually put a low value on the shipping docs, if so how low was the value? I think it depends a lot on that value if get charged (significant) duties

Importing is a crapshoot. Use regular trackable post shipping to increase your chances of not paying taxes.

trackable post shipping such as?

The place I order from uses FEDEX and it never fails, I always get hit with duties and taxes.

That's what I mean. Private couriers will always gouge you.

I got my new MRA windshield from a seller in Lithuania. He used regular Lithuania post airmail and sent me a tracking number. I didn't have to pay anything.

I'd say 40-50% of the time it gets stopped at customs and you have to pay sales tax.
