What's a good first car?

A little off-topic, but a daily commute from Milton to Leslie/Eglinton and back will be a big suck on your soul. Probably 45min-1hr in the am and 1hr-1.5hr return in the pm. Riding a motorcycle may be enjoyable. Driving a car would suck.

I had a 2008 Mazda 3, engine died at about 280,000km. Very, very little rust. I did see others with rusted trunks though.

I'm now driving a 2015 Honda Civic.

I miss the Mazda 3.

What is up with that, when I drive my wife's Santa it pisses me off, I put it on the softest option and I still get resistance when I start turning, only for a split second but the turning effort is not consistent.

Did they test ride these cars? Useless feture
I have a 2015 Santa Fe, I leave it on the hard setting for steering. No problems at all. Feels better than my elantra

I continue my tradition of buying only non Sunny S approved vehicles of european origin. I just signed the deal for a Fiat 500c Lounge, manual, left-over 2015 model (because people don't buy manual transmissions any more, but I don't want anything else).

I already have one FiatChrysler product in the driveway, and it has been fine.

Lol even on the bike it's a terrible ride. Navigating through 50 km of the 401 is beyond a nightmare. I only take my bike of I come in on the weekend or I plan to skip the morning and afternoon traffic.

Just this morning someone cut me off pretty bad. I'm lucky it was raining this morning so I didn't take my bike lol

My manager at work has a Fiat 500, not sure of exact model. I've driven it twice, very fun car. He also has a 7? Triumph tr6, that I really like driving.

I'm a fan of the Fiat, I do however have some reservations with the long term reliability of MultiAir cylinder head design. I like the tech, just going to wait and see how it holds up over the next few years before I form an opinion.

Hey all,

I'm graduating soon and I'll be starting work right after. My commute is about 65 km one way (Milton to Leslie and Eglinton). So I'll be needing a car.

For the time being I'm using one of the four at home and I've realized I definitely do not want a Honda civic. They kill my back whenever I'm driving.

I don't want to spend more than about 20k looking at around 5-10k down and the rest finance.

I was looking at used Lexus CT200h as fuel will definetly be a big cost for me so I want something pretty fuel efficient.

My dad's accord is also very fuel efficient and comfortable so I wouldn't mind that either.

Any other recommendations for a comfortable car that's fuel efficient and reliable and within about 20k.

Thanks for the help.

You want fuel efficient? Get a Diesel, you will get a significant dent on your paycheck just on gas.

I drove VW diesels for years, I took two of them past 400,000 km. But my interest in them stopped when the emission control equipment went crazy in 2009 (actually since 2007 but VW skipped two years). Waaaayyy too complicated. And, it seems like they didn't really meet emission standards ...

The diesels from 2006 and before didn't have as much emission control crap, but those are getting to be old cars, and most people who bought them did so because they knew they were going to be putting a lot of mileage on them (as I did).

I've gone back to modern, but non-turbo and non-direct-injection, gasoline engines.

Best to put off a car as long as possible. They are money pits. The money you spend for temporary convenience, could be a substantial portion of a house down payment, and maintenance. My first car was a 10 year old Volare, that lasted us 6 or 7 years. Took it on our honeymoon to Minake. Now the wife wants new and we can afford to pay cash, so we do.

Money pits is right! I didn't spent dime one on b/n truckette for 6 yrs. except for oils and filters. Then the ish hit the fan. U joints, tie rod ends, brakes all around and sundry. I was probably overcharged a couple hunnert on that job. Rage, then depression sank in. You're not going to have that type of negative experience with 10yr. old Volares, that's for sure:thumbup:

Maybe, if you were shopping for a 911 Turbo. :lmao:

$20k barely puts you in the 5% down on a cheap GTA condo. Substantial portion of a HOUSE down payment? Where, in Timmins?

I think the general sentiment was to buy only what you can afford ... don't be tempted by monthly payments to buy something you can't really afford.

I actually financed the car that I just bought even though I could have paid cash ... because for 0% financing, I can do something else with that cash.

Yes I could be saving the money, only problem is I still have to get to work lol. Transit will cost about 480 a month (340 Go and 140 ttc). No thank you
