What would you do?

Brake as hard as possible and hope for the best.

This.

In this case it doesn't matter what you do as long as you do it fast enough. By "doesn't matter" I mean that there is no clear way to avoid damage/injury, but the quicker the reaction, the greater are the chances of avoiding it. First instinct is usually to hit the brakes, so stick to it and hope for the best.

Hit the brakes, turn on the wipers and hope for the best.

This scenario has me in a car? Well in that case, I'm going for the bus stop. I get bonus points for bus stops, right?

I'd aim for the kid and grab as much brake as I could.. chances are you will miss the target. by the time you get to where your aiming,, the target will move. that is why insurance company statements say.. I had to swerve 3 times before I hit the car... I WATCHED a fender fall off a trailer recently,,, and the lead truck in the oncoming traffic did exactly that! he swerved and slammed into the fender!... if he had of just slowed hard and maintained his course.. he would have totally missed it..
