What rifle should I buy?

I finally went for my Restricted....goddamn this paperword is taking too long. I have a Kimber 1911 on layaway for targets, maybe competition

About to send in my paperwork to upgrade to restricted.. not really in a hurry though, as my range has 6 month wait period before they give an ATT to new members

I'm not good at waiting, lol. I've also always wanted a nice 1911. I was looking hard for a well taken care of M1911A1 from the 40s or even Vitenam, but no dice

I've spent waay too much on rifles this year to even think about "nice" pistols... :(

I'll probably get some .22 and/or a Norc 1911 just to get into it

Do it. Might take 6 months just to process, especially in Ontario. And when they instituted that crap they told us "oh, it's just due diligence to keep the guns out of the wrong hands - will be handled quickly and professionally" lol My recommendation is not to waste $$$ on a .22LR handgun unless you wanna engage in target pistol snoozefest. If you wanna run and gun, 90% of your training will be dryfire anyway, so you won't be wasting too much money on ammo when you hit the range. Invest your $$$ in a GOOD centerfire handgun. For most action shooting sports, the best entry-level option is CZ 75 SP-01 Shadow. Costs about as much as a Norc 1911 and a .22LR pistol combined, but you buy once, cry once, and it will last you 100,000 rounds of ammo. A Glock would save you about $300-400 all told (in purchase price and mags), but it's a light piece of plastic that's not as good at absorbing the recoil as the Czech nutcracker, so your followup shots will be slower - definite consideration in timed competition.

If you REALLY wanna compete with a 1911, a Norc would be a great platform to put money into as long as you don't mind just competing on our side of the border. You won't be able to take it to the US. I don't recommend a 1911 as a first gun, but it's your $$$, your choice. I did my homework and couldn't be happier with my Shadow Line. The only money I "had to" put into her was $10-15 for springs.

Oh and I second the CZ SP01, excellent gun through and through.

1) If it's for action shooting definitely go for CZ 75 SP01 Shadow or CZ 75 SP01 Shadow Line. Watch out because their model lineup is an alphabet soup. If you're not sure, post the link to the ad and ask here, we'll be happy to sort you out

2) Great gun but it's not something I'd wanna carry for work or personal in a jurisdiction where carrying is allowed. While being so damn heavy makes it a great sporting gun, especially for those of us with small hands and/or weak grips, if I ever start carrying, I'm buying a Glock. They may feel like plastic toys weight-wise, but they're super-reliable and I'd feel one a lot less on my hip.

The sooner you get your rpal, the sooner you can purchase a restricted. You do not have to be a member of a club at the time of purchase, just have to intend on joining one.

I'm aware, but I doubt I'd buy a restricted without being in a club... I'd never shoot it that way!

Sendin off my paperwork hopefully today. I remember I got my PAL in record time, hoping for another win like that (though I know that won't happen).

If it's taking a long time, call them and try to convince them to allow your references to call in. Typically you will need a case number and an extension. That's how I sped up my process by a lot. Got mine in under 6 weeks.

I might try that if it takes well into the summer.

I'll start looking into the Shadow for the time being, thanks for all the advice

Just say "my references are hard to reach, half the time they don't pick up the phone and would prefer to call in"..

Here are the 2 you should be looking at:

Shadow line has some extra goodies that are worth the extra cost and the loss of a mag. These guys are based in Montreal, are the official CZ dealer for Canada and great to deal with. They also have a deal that if you buy 5 or more CZ mags at the same time, you pay $43 a pop instead of 50ish, which is the regular price. If you wanna shop locally, Al Flaherty's is in Toronto and they're also an outstanding business.

SOS, I'm a complete noob when it comes to firearms, and could use some help in making my purchase. The goal is to begin by hunting waterfowl with my younger son. We both have completed the hunter education course, the turkey hunting course and yesterday, after ripping open his newly arrived PAL, he rushed me over to SAIL where I ended up buying him his first shotgun. A Browning BPS 12 ga. with walnut stock and 2 chokes, but that still leaves me “gun less”. I am quite content in buying a used shotgun and am looking for a reliable, well-made pump action. The question I ask is; what brands I should be looking for and what “used” stores would you recommend I visit. My budget is about $500.00, thanks.

Thanks for the link, I appreciate it as we have never handled firearms before and have a lot to learn.

SeaBreez, I think most of the recommendations that will you will get will include the following:
Remington 870, Mossberg 500, or Maverick Model 88.

Whichever one you decide is best for you, buy a hunting package that includes a long smooth bore barrel for geese, turkey, etc, as well as a rifled barrel in case you want to use it for deer. Even if you never intend to use the rifled barrel, you could always sell it later and recover some of your purchase price.

Wanstalls has a Mossberg 500 combo for $399 + tax + $10 shipping: http://www.wanstallsonline.com/mossberg-model-500-crown-grade-combo-54169.html

Model 88 is available for even cheaper: $289 at Wholesale Sports: http://www.wholesalesports.com/stor...shotguns/model-88-combination/prod210229.html

I didn't find any current deals on the 870. Lebaron has the package for $570 or so... but it is also easy to find an 870 used as it is a very popular shotgun.

Some say you are better buying a used 870 Express or Wingmaster. The new ones aren't made as well.

I bought a new 870 Express Supermag a few years back and it's giving me some trouble now, by sometimes jamming after firing a shell.

Thanks for the heads up on the 870. Is there a place where I could look at model 88? I signed up for gunnutz, thanks.
