I’ve been thinking to have a tattoo since I was a kid. But my dad was a cop so this was absolutely no go for me, even during my college days as where I grew up (at that time, not now obviously) tattoos were sign of being criminal..

Later I was busy exploring and surviving moving around so there were no time to even think about such things.

Well, lately I came back to this (midlife crisis?) and have been planning.. for like last 15 years LOL.
Can’t decide what to get, how big and where on the body… I’d love to get a full Japanese style sleeve BUT it looks like a lot of pain and a huge commitment to the design..
It kind of makes me think about my skin as a blank canvas which I can only paint once, and that’s a problem I have not being able to decide..

Do you have tattoos? What made you have one?

No tattoos for me... Or on me.
I don't mind them as long as they are tastefully done.

I don't like tattoo above the collar bone or on hands. Especially the name of your 1 night stand on your neck. Similarly a tattoo of a lady bug on your toe is also stupid.

Tattoos have now become the norm and many are done just to fit in without a true meaning behind it. Some are just awful( in terms of the work itself) and the placement as well as the subject. I want to see what they will look like in 20 years time.

Other than that I don't mind them. I know of many people that have them. 1 person in particular has some tens of thousands of $ of them including his while head ( only seen when he shaves his head) and a full blacked out sleeve. They are actually well done and look pretty good.

I have sort of always wanted one but I am not sure what I would get done where. So because I can't decide I am not getting one. Also having old school Polish parents doesn't help. Back when I was 16ish, my ear piercing didn't go over very well.

There is also the view point that they are not healthy for your body etc etc etc....
Not sure if those claims are valid.

Like anything, there are amazing works of art and a ton a crap.

I’ve got family with awesome ink and others that hate it. For those that hate it, they mention how it will look like crap when you’re old. Well, who cares?! When you are 70 plus, a blotchy tattoo isn’t going to make you look worse!

Anyways, I’ve got some upper arm sleeves and happy with them. I don’t think anyone at work really knows other than a few close coworkers that has seen me at some event that had them exposed.

While I try not to judge, I do recommend to younger folks trying to make their way in the world to hold off or don’t go nuts with neck or face stuff. Do your legs, arms and torso front or back and have at it. You can wear a dress or suit for the most part and be fine. But, ink exposed above the collar or knuckles or face? Unless you live a hard life and don’t care, ink it up all you want for yourself and try and keep it somewhat discreet.

I looked for other pics of my other arm but, honestly it’s not something I have for public display. Folks will see them at the beach or hot tub but, I suppose I’m a bit modest. lol.

Anyways, to each their own. I say rock it if you got it. But, have some taste. lol.

Got my first one roughly 10 years ago, at the time performing and music was a significant part of my life, I never have spur of the moment tatts like some, thought about it for a long time before finally getting one, this year has been 'interesting' for me, so I got 3 of them. Same thing though, thought about them for a while before finally committing.

They are totally normalized now though, and have no stigma.

I always go black ink though, no color. And all them are consistent in terms of art and style.

+1 for getting them somewhere that you can cover them up for formal occasions with a shirt if needed.

Do some research and get them from a quality shop.
Try not to get them during track season (tricky to heal during heat in leather suits)

2, from both of my trips to Thailand.

So started getting it late in life.

When you feel the inspiration then talk to an artist to sketch it and make your mind up from there.

I have 2, on on the back of each leg, from heel to upper calf, done about 20 years ago.

Had mine placed there, because at the time I was dealing with many landscaping clients every day in the summer while wearing shorts and wanted them to see me with a clean look as a first impression.

I would have got them done much sooner, but my line of work at the time was too physical to get tat's because I was always getting cut and scratched up on my legs every day, so they would never heal properly. However I was in a moto accident and off work for that year, so getting these were a silver lining to getting hit by a van.

I love tat's.

I don't see the appeal, people can do what they want.
I'm not going to judge... I know a Dr. who's ink'd from his collar to his ankles...

My only critique would be that tattoos have become kinda boring... So many people have them and there's not a lot of originality.

I know way more people that have spent a fortune getting tats removed than those that are happy with them.

When my my daughter was looking into it, I asked her how many of the things she thought were cool 5 years ago, she still thought were cool.

Waiter and sort friend at the Bowls Club tonight is Maori and his full right arm tats looked excellent. Gold earring added to the look with his darker skin.
Some of the aging biker ladies not so much.
I don't have one, no intention, suspect dottor does...don't care either way.
The Yakusa tats on Tokyo Vice were astonishing ....one of the main characters had effectively full body tat that took 4 hours to do each time.
In real life ...sometimes locks you into a culture you can't leave - Yakuza notably.

In the case of the Maori I think a good thing t keep their identity and traditions alive tho the tattooed chin whiskers on the women I don't like.

Always wanted one, never found one that I wanted bad enough (I started a thread years ago on here). Thought about getting something with the kids involved. My BIL had his kids draw something up, and he got that tattooed on his body. Came out looking great.

One problem for me is I'm growing (not vertically) and anything I do will probably look garbage unless I get that under control.

One that's ALWAYS been on the back of my mind is this:

Which is the location of our sun using pulsar triangulation. Not sure why, but I've always liked it. It's from the plate sent out on Voyager 1:

Apparently it's not very accurate to find earth (may be good or bad depending on your viewpoint), but I like the simplicity.

Outside of that...I've got 3 kids...not sure how I could put that into a tattoo.

In like them when done for historical or cultural reasons , and sentimental . My Dad had a naval tattoo in a time when only bad guys had ink, he was not a bad guy in the least. I’d like one but never figured out what to do. My daughter is currently paying thousands to remove her teenage mistakes . I don’t care who has / doesn’t have them , that not how I measure a person. Face and neck ink is not something I’m attracted to but again, not my problem. There was a big discussion about this on GTAM years ago .

Not for me ... too permanent of a mistake if you then come to that realization later in life.

B and I have talked about it. She would get her late husband's race number 84,i would get the distance of the Bruce Trail 792.7 that Sue and i hiked. It'll probably never happen.

Got my first one at 14 and many since. Had a custom, one of a kind, Phoenix done on my shoulder and as with most tattoo shops back in the day they took a picture and put it in artists portfolio. Fast forward 10 years I get into a elevator and the girl next to me, in her early 20's has the exact same one on her shoulder. I was going to ask where she got the idea of it but I already knew.

If I hadn't done any by the time I hit my midlife crisis, I probably wouldn't have bothered. Just buy a sports car.
