What helmet is actually really good and worth its 500-800?

After a certain price range of helmets about $200 .. it becomes all about esthetics and comfortability <- these do matter to a lot of riders as you will be wearing it frequently and/or for prolonged periods of times.... as long as safety is concerned, just check if its certified SNELL & DOT... and if you really want a safe helmet, check the tag inside of helmet referring to what year SNELL or DOT certification it went thru !!

I prefer the Suomy Spec 1R personally. Yes, it's worth the money. They are very comfortable, light, aerodynamic and have sweet graphics.

I've put literally hundreds of thousands of kilometers on motorcycles, wearing helmets of varying prices. Arais and Shoeis simply last longer than cheap crap. The cheap crap is just as safe, but the interior padding, the fabric that meets the back of your neck, the visor mechanism, and the vents are of a much higher quality on the more expensive helmets. After having a visor mechanism break on the second day of a ten day tour this past spring, I'm never wearing one of my cheap helmets again, even if it means one of my Arais getting soaked day after day... If you put 5000 kilometers per year on, wear whatever is comfortable - if you put on 50000, you'll go through five $100 helmets in the same time you'll go through one $500 helmet.

The top end Arais are worth the $800 msrp, I have the corsair V and compared to my ****** old $150 scorpion it barely feels like I'm wearing it. The fit, aerodynamics and weight are amazing, tho these lids tend to be a bit loud without earplugs as they are made for racing so max airflow and lightest weight. I'll never go back to a cheap helmet this is one area where you really do get what you pay for.

while i've not as much experience as many others, i have a Suomy Apex that i picked up for $250 which i find quiet and extremely light

for me trying lids on in a shop, i could only judge fit/comfort, and weight. price wasn't an issue. i was surprised that my Suomy is lighter than even the HJC carbon one (both L)

Interestingly...again...my on sale $250 Shark RSR2 is 150g lighter than the Arai and 130g lighter than a Shoei X11...it really does feel like you're wearing nothing. Price has no direct relevance whatsoever.

Read the articles on that site too. Particularly the ones that talk about marketing and helmets.

If you have an amerifriend...then check this place out http://www.compacc.com/

There's a couple of Arais there for $299 and some Shoeis if you're set on brand. They don't ship to Canada though I don't think. Sportbiketrackgear usually has a few good specials too, I see the RSR2 I bought is still on special and that really is a killer deal for a top of the range light helmet (one of the lightest premium brand helmets). Again though....fit first.

Personally I have an icon alliance and love it. It was cheap and fits great, no issues whatsoever. It's larger (not fit but actual size) than the expensive helmets but the more of me that is visible to drivers the better. The helmet weighs 1600 grams. I've tried on the smaller and lighter helmets and really did not find much difference.

It's all about your preference. Previous posters have mentioned, any helmet that is dot approved is just as safe. The rest is esthetics.

The AGV s-4 looks like really good bang for the buck and is in a low price point.

Welll, your RSR2 is a top quality helmet. It is a direct comparitor to a Shoei x-11 or an Arai despite the fact you can get them on sale for cheap.

I agree with the observations that you get better quality materials and finish, typically, with better quality/priced helmets. I'm a big fan of buying last years graphics/models though and and saving hundreds of dollars but still getting the same quality. I use an X-11 right now and find it far better built than my Shoei TZR or my wife's Exo 700.

Agreed....it's just smart shopping as far as I'm concerned.

My helmet was $700 + and is worth it to me. Its very light weight, comfortable and I like the styling of it. I used to buy cheaper helmets, looking at the price tag more then the helmet itself, as long as it fit my head. The more I rode, the longer I rode I decided the price was small to be comfortable and be something I can wear every day 8 months of the year. If I was a fair weather rider, I would consider something cheaper as I would lower my expectations on what I want out of a helmet.

I dont cheap out on my lids, and its not a safety thing, its just what fits me best, is comfortable, light weight and something I just like.

Agreed. Fact remains that if you don't have confidence in the brand you are wearing, any data on its safety, durability, etc., is really pointless.

OK, so I went to the Powerspots on Kippling today and tried few of them. And also I asked the guy there the same question as the question of this thread.

And now, I see the difference. And I can relate to many comments here about higher prie range helmets. Quality of material, the way the shell is produced, the fabrics used, small parts like vent covers, optically correct lens, weight and comfort - all that makes big difference in the helmet. Too bad you can't test drive them :)

I'd say - $700 it is for me...or on sale haha

And yes, quality of parts is big difference, on my $100 one, it's actually $80+tax, the vent covers rattling at 80 km/hr+ speeds, I bet that won't happen on $500 lid :)

Those things don't happen with my $140 Icon Alliance.
