What helmet is actually really good and worth its 500-800?

OK, I have $100 helmet, and tried couple of friends which are in the range of $400+. The difference was very minimal. I also bought Scorpion XC700, which was supposed to be also very good, but I found with the visor closed it was actually louder than my $100 Zox.

Please help! Which one is actually worth the money spending and why?

PS: XC700 is for sale, XL but fits closer to L, so after 15 minutes on my head, i need to sell it.

Wear ear plugs. A quiet helmet does not always equal a good helmet.

cue the "you get what you paid for" and the "your head is worth it" crowd in 5...4....3....

If you pay msrp then I'm not sure any $500 helmet is 5 times better than the $100 helmet. But you'll find plenty of last years models etc on sale where the value to price ratio is a little more sane. From my own experience, the finish and interior material is a better quality on the higher range helmets. I like Shark helmets because they fit me and I really like the thicker, optically correct visors. Don't go by brand though, go by fit first. A $1000 uncomfortable helmet is going to be a large paperweight. If you find a perfect fit...that may be worth hundreds of dollars to you. Another thing I've learned is that the quietness of the helmet doesn't correspond with price for everyone. What's quiet on someone's head can be noisy as hell on another person's. It has everything to do with head size, shape, fit, riding style even. Just get a helmet that fits really well, is comfortable, that vents the way you want it to and looks like you want it to, then look at what brand you have in your hands....that's the order I'd look at things.

I do wear them. But you didn't really answer anything. I also believe in what you pay is what you get. But again, which one is really worth it? I can buy a Schuberth for close to a grand, or Arai for 4-5 bills, or Scorpion 2-3 year old model for 2 bills...Why, what is so different in them? they all claim pretty much the same.

Thx. See yeh, the fit might be the main problem. I know about about quietness, i just made an example, but you have a point about the fit.

You just answered your own question.

Like someone above said, it's about fit. I've been in the store, ready to drop the big bucks on the big names....but none of them fit so I wouldn't spend it.

I now ride in a Scorpion (same one your'e selling actually) that I paid $99 for and have never been happier. Fit is perfect, no fogging, and I haven't noticed a noise issue (because I wear ear plugs).

I have had a few lids, Scorpion 1000, Shark RSI, AGV Ti-Tech and my latest lid an Arai Corsair. After getting the Arai ($800 + taxes) I have been spoiled. I just can't wear anything else...I can't..I wont. Its the lightest and by far the most comfortable lid I have ever owned, its also has a smaller shape which in comparison to the Shark and AGV makes you look like a lollipop. Now whether its worth $800+ to others, I'm not sure. But I'd gladly pay another $800 for my next Arai.

Another thumbs up for Arais. My old Quantum was extremely comfortable and very nicely constructed. Their design also makes them quite compact. Placed side by side with the Arai, my new Shoei RF1100 (Quantum now discontinued, no other Arai fits) is about 15% larger.

Hmmm...

ok...maybe I should just get 2XL.

Try the new RX-Qs they are supposed to be the replacment for the Quantums

Not everybody will benefit from a $800 helmet. If the Zox works for you then why change? On the other hand if you think it could be improved in some ways shop around. Of course, you might find another $100 helmet fits the bill, then fine.

The only helmet I could finds that fit me close to properly was an Arai. After enduring a HJC for a year it was worth paying 4x more just for the fit but the quiet and ventilation and elimination of buffetting at speed, as well as the quality of materials, all made it a home run as far as I'm concerned. But if I could have paid $100 to get the same benefits, of course I would have. That just wasn't in the cards, for ME.

I've smacked my head into tarmac twice now wearing $800 helmets and head injury has never been an issue. I'll keep on wearing what appears to be working if you don't mind. Although I never pay MRSP for them.

@Moreno636. Didn't fit. Apparently the RX-Qs are closer to the Corsair than the Quantum.

They now share the same removable interior padding and are very similar in fit....The Quantum did have a much different fit compared to the RX7's...

Helmets Helmets Helmets, always asking about helmets...

Get a Shoei or Arai or Soumy and stfu... Its kinda like asking if a BMW is worth x amount more then a Honda, the answer is simple. YES. Why, you ask, I will tell you, b/c its premium grade shiiiiiit! The visor mechanisms, the venting, the airodynamics, the internal material etc is all top end (kinda like the BMW vs Honda thing from earlier). So as I said spend the ****ing money... and make sure it fits.

Im going for a ride...

What he said.

I'm with Holmes on this.

My Shoei X-Twelve is my fourth helmet and I have no interest whatsoever in replacing it until it's about to expire. My previous lids were an HJC and two ICON (Mainframe and Airframe models). It's the first helmet I've had that is truly aerodynamic, doesn't buffet at highway speeds, and doesn't cause me any neck strain whatsoever. The mechanisms are all like butter in operation. Amazing. Perfectly engineered, fits my head perfectly too. But seriously, the lack of neck strain and wind buffeting alone has made this lid worth its almost $900 price tag.

Check out the Sharp motorcycle helmet test site.

http://sharp.direct.gov.uk/

Shows some cheaper helmets are just as good as expensive ones, some mid range are crap etc etc etc.
Might help make a decision as to what kind of helmet you buy in the future.

Lol...it's not the price. I have a $600 msrp helmet that cost me $250 and a $400 msrp helmet that cost me $100 ....the fit is great in both. Find the fit first...forget about the damn brand, they will nearly all protect your head the same way. Then go online surfing for bargains once you have the size.
