What do you look for in a shop ?

Whether its an independent or a dealership, what are you looking for in a shop ? Is it always about price, or is there more to it ?

My pet peeves?:

Dudes sitting there twiddling their thumbs while you(potential customer) come in looking for something, and no one comes up and asks you if you need anything.

Dudes sitting there looking miserable, like they dont want to be there but are forced to be there as salesmen.

Cocky attitude is no go for me.

Was at the bike show in Jan. and found the bike that I like. I was going to order one from Markham Powersport at the spot but a guy told me to wait for the other guy even though he was just standing there. He didn't even want to answer any question.

Walk towards the Honda booth, Jeremy from Lindsay Cycle was willing to help. Bought it and pick it up without any issue. Good service from him. Yes, I bought a bike from a dealer 150km away from my place. I don't care. I'm not paying someone who does not appreciate my business.

Pleasant attitudes, and service, meaning they know what they are talking about, and don't have to ask someone or constantly look something up.
Oh and attention. They are there to help you, and not distracted by a co-worker or something other, or like your are bothering them.

Parking. Yes it is a little silly but I can drive 30 minutes somewhere to buy something. If I can’t find parking quickly and easily I’ll just turn around.

I’m fortunate that I do pretty much all work on my bikes. I don’t revalve suspension, rebuild rear shocks or do bottom ends on engines. This stuff is more for my mx bikes so with that I use guys who are at the tracks and that racers use. So word of mouth and experience is the biggest factor.

Sburns, I hear you except I would much rather someone says I don’t and goes to get the right answer instead of guessing.

Trust. I pay a premium to know a shop does proper diagnostic work before repair, and when they do the repair, it's done using best practices.

competence

an example is a member here with a broken frame slider bolt

dealer told him because it's broken off in the engine
he may have to spend $8 K for a new one
I'd never set foot in that place again

the decision to not DIY is because I need to have no FU's

Are you asking about the sales experience, ongoing warranty or service work or both?

I just love going into a dealer to look at new bikes and the sales guy does not know anything about the bike in question or even something as basic as warranty coverage. Has to go look it up. Maybe he sold fridges at last job.

Service staff at the counter are indifferent, too busy talking among themselves, once you have their attention takes forever to look something up in the system, never in stock of course, say they are going to call you when parts delivered from Mother Honda, but they forget and then you have to follow up yourself.

Just plain lousy service overall and dealers probably wonder why most people order things online from the US.

In fairness to GP Bikes, good experience on accessories (jackets, pants, boots and helmets) at various bike shows and their Pickering location. No experience with them re parts and bike sales.

What they said, I have never had a positive experience at dealerships....ever

I do almost all my own work, and I'm pretty meticulous with maintenance so I rarely need to do open heart stuff on my bikes. Sometimes I need it done fast, sometimes I don't have the tools, sometimes I don't have the expertise, and lately I just don't feel like doing the work. I gave up doing tires and valve service, I still do everything else.

There are two bike shops near me that are trusty, sadly one is closing -- neither are dealerships. They both have skilled techs that diagnose problems then change parts -- dealers sometimes just change parts until the problem is fixed. They both cost less than dealers, but they are not the cheapest options. I've never felt screwed, I'm always happy when I pay my bill.

The only shop I ever trusted was Rosey Toes**. Every single other experience I've had (all with "reputable" shops) have involved over-promising, over-billing, and under-delivering.

The only mechanical work I've paid for in recent years are safeties, tire mountings, and exhaust work on my car because I didn't want to do any cutting or welding (the shop didn't either, they just billed me for a new system from the cat onwards, and didn't even use the right muffler - another disappointment). My socket set has never let me down

**I knew exactly what I was getting, and what they were good at. 100% satisfaction from Ted

For now, one that is moderately successful.
I've been to a couple that were really successful, and the work went from being spot on, to being spotty, over the long term.
Eventually, they need more mechanics, and hire one of those people, that you don't want working on your bike.

All the best mechanics work independently. KMW is a perfect example.

That my bar fridge is stocked!

If I gotta pay I'd look for

Honesty
Aptitude
Availability
Take a look around - always ask myself if I could work there. If the shop is kaos then likely the team is too.
