Well I wana get into dirt riding mostly trail/signle track riding. My question is what cc bike do you recommend and 4 stroke or 2 stroke?? Also what brand was looking at ktm'sor kawi

Well if there is no limit to what you are willing to spend, then go buy yourself a nice KTM 250/350/450 exc or sx. I personally would like a KTM 300xc. If you got the money buy a bike for me too and I'll go riding with ya!

Depends on your riding experience, a 250 2s mx works quite well in single track but if your not able to controll it your going to get tired very quickly and possibly hurt. 2s is cheaper and easier to maintain but a 250 4s would be a good bike to learn on. A 125 2s doesn't have much torque and takes a bit of work to ride especially on steep rutted, rooted, rocky hills or in any sand. Brand isn't really important with dirtbikes, they're all good machines but some suit you and your riding style better than others. If you've never really ridden on dirt and are a bigger guy a kdx220 might be a good place to start.

250 exc would most likely be what your looking for then. Lots of power and being the exc it will be more managable, the sx would be a big handful to learn single track on.

2stroke KTM 200xc w they all have adjustable power valves and most of the trick stuff you would need to add on other bikes. All you need to add are skid plate and spark arrester.4stroke WR250f as they have bigger rads as far as I know, never had any valves move on mine ever.Another 2stroke you might even consider GasGas the only thing would be finding a dealer for support, light and nimble bikes for sure.

You think a 200 is all I need? Also what d the ltters at the end of the cc stand for? Sorry for the dumb questions this is all new to me

It tells you the model basically, usually anything with an f in it is four stroke. The exc is an enduro line where the sx is their motocross as far as ktm goes. A 200 would haul you around in the tight stuff just fine, didn't realize they had that size, but you may decide to upgrade after the season.

I'd rather get something with more power and take it easy then have to upgrade after a year and take a hit on selling this bike. I'm looking at maybe a ktm 250 like you said or a 300

It seems like you mostly have your mind made up, but I can provide some input.

2 strokes you need to be conscious of fuel consumption if you're planning longer rides (ie deep into Ganaraska) and may need to look into larger or supplementary fuel tanks.
In terms of power, 250 2s or 450 4s would be really snappy and hard to control in tight singletrack. Even with my yz250f if I twitch on the throttle at low RPMs at a bad moment it wheelies and tries to get away.
Gearing, it's nice to be able to idle through really tight stuff without slipping the clutch. Bigger bikes might be harder to gear well for a broad range of speeds/conditions.

I'm not trying to defend my investment, but just giving you a few ideas from my own research. I originally wanted a WR450F, but after researching I ended up with the YZ250F and I'm very happy with the decision. There are certainly cases where the big bike power would be good (deep muddy riverbed for example) but for the majority of riding I believe the 250F to be plenty.

You should get 2.5-3hrs of riding in tight trails and that's on my RM250. The extra power is nice but like Dave said, sneeze and your into a tree. Starting on a smaller bike that is easier to controll will speed up the learning curve and its not like on the asphalt where you just don't give it throttle, when your getting bounced around and bucked over rocks/roots and you get a little tired or arm pump that's when things get scary. Trees hurt and they don't move. Choose what you want but a 250 enduro would be plenty, the 300 would be more for fire roads and more open terrain.

KTMs usually have more power than other 2stroke bikes,a 200 KTM has as much power as most 250s but has less weight. If you are sure you are going to ride trail and single track you really cant beat the KTM200.Dont be fooled by the cc numbers a 2stroke will almost have 450 4sroke hp and most 4stroke tend to overheat when the riding gets slow on the single track. You dont need a 300 at Ganaraska single track, they are a handfull when the power comes on,you will have more fun on a smaller bike.

+1 i am constantly trying to reign my 300 in on the single-track... not good for learning.

I'll be doing most of my riding at granny. If that helps. I want to ride more technical trails.

I think granny will be exhausted lol. The 200xc would be a perfect single track bike, it'll have enough power that you won't get bored.

...and just enough to remind you who's boss if you're not paying attention ;)

I have been racing a 250f for about 5 years now. I could race a 450 but I don't need one. My 250 still keeps me on my toes and I like picking on the squids on 450s that can't ride.

In the ganny cruising in 5th the 250f is out of steam though. MX tracks are a whole different animal then going through the woods, a 450 in my opinion is too much power/weight to try and be as precise as you have to be in there. The 250f is boring when you want to ride more open terrain IMHO. 250 2s are still amazing single track weapons but get left behind on the mx track. Maybe when they decide to start updating the technology on the 2s again they may be able to compare. They're not for beginners though, it'll feel like a bull in a china shop which is why we keep saying the 200xc.

Ya I think you guys are right, I'm looking for a newer used 200 right now, Also what mods do you recomend ?
