What cleaner do you use to clean grease on your bike?

Clean it with kerosene and start using Dupont Teflon Multi-use lubricant. It doesn't fling at all, and if you really overdo it it's easy to clean.

Also, get your wheels painted in a more practical color. If you just want to pose, you'll get away without lubing the chain at all for a few years.


I Use WD40 on a rag to clean the rims. It does the job nicely.

Use the Dupont Teflon Chain Saver Lubricant. It is a very clean product (it's not sticky) and will not mess up your rims like other chain lubricants used.

I re-lube my chain every 2 fuel ups.
 
Pledge. I also use it to clean the whole bike. Smells lemon fresh too!
Your poor paint job...any ways, for light oils and grease, try a decent quality liquid dish soap like dawn or sunlight and use a microfiber or soft terry towel. isn't as harsh as solvents. Whatevers left over, use a microfibre with a splash of mineral spirits and wipe away the rest. follow each swipe with a damp rag and make sure not to let it sit, or srub one area to much.

This minimizes the wear and tear on the rims coatings, as you will require little to no solvent as the dishsoap does the trick.. I've use this trick on everything from hub caps to Bentley rims.

you can also water down some all purpose amonia base cleaner.

Tirox chain cleaner, takes care of most of the back end. Was using Motul chain lube, just picked up some chain saver will let u know how it goes, for what its worth I found after I sprayed the chain saver and let it set the stuff just disappears somewhere, not bad :) Do you guys clean the chain every time to lube it or do u just keep putting down lube? Is it true theres a big difference between lubing the chain after warming it up than applying it cold?

I was looking at the ebay post, if you scroll down it has the real prices. They must be getting mad complaints about their markup, its like the lube is made of unicorn tears or some s*#t

Tirox chain cleaner is just pressurized kerosene - convenient for cleaning the chain, but kinda expensive for cleaning anything else.

If you scroll down I think that price is for a case of 6 spray cans (11 oz). The shipping is expensive otherwise the price seems about right. It's not just for one can.

No, the price is not right. It's a rip off. Lowes will sell you six cans for $36 plus tax.

If your spoked rims have tubed tires, make sure you don't let the solvents and oils get on the base of the spokes as it can be drawn in to the tubes inside. Doesn't take much to make it past the thin rubber spoke-end protector strip. Works its way in by cappiliary action.

I love shaft drive or enclosed maintenance-free belts or chains. In the old days, the worst part (I always did the lubing as soon as I got home on a hot chain so it could setup overnight) was having to let numerous mosquitos bite your *** and cheeks as you balance the bike on a block with lube in one hand and other hand on bar. I used to do it with chain running in gear. Had the op down pat, but couldn't swat that sangqueechner skitter till process done. Now I get home, roll into the garage and get off. Done. By the time I would have been finishing up with the chain lubing and requiste cleaning later, I was already onto a 2nd Guiness stout...who know...the good stuff from Ireland.

Yup, love my shaft drive and enclosed belt. The scooter has the belt...never been in there yet to take a peek at it..
Remember when Honda Passports came with enclosed chain covers? They should bring that back and screw the manly look of an exposed chain...there's enough bulging muscle and whisker parts of a bike still to fill that void. Chains are like a women...always needing attention right when you're your busiest with some other pressing chore.

Although they do get the cleaniest unencumbered torque to the rear the most efficiently...especially when well lubed and not too tight from an owner's miss-guided attempt to reduce driveline lash instead of gently clutching it when needed.. the best, good torque, good power, good fuel mileage, and reduced unsprung weight for RR bikes that will better appreciate that handling perk and dead simple gearing swaps...unless you're ItIsWhatItIs...he'll probably argue with you on that one as per his famous signature I see at times from TAFB, haha.
But...Yup...guess there will always be a place in the world for chains.

Pledge is used regularly for cleaning vehicles on the show floors of fingerprints and other smudges. The Bentley dealership probably uses it too :).

Microfiber and terry towels? You seem to think everyone has a show-only bike. Some of us like to ride the damned thing :)

Of course not, unless they are certified masochists, OCD sufferers or lube the chain once a year. I don't know which is worse.

I don't think there is any significant difference. I lube mine when it's warmed up simply because I lube it after the ride or when I stop for break/gas. I suspect the "warm chain" practice was introduced mostly because that's how the lube dries out faster so it doesn't fling. It's also assumed that you won't warm up your chain then lube it and go for a ride right after. You should give it a few minutes to soak in in any case.

My MZ ETZ250 from the previous life had a fully enclosed chain. I've never even seen what the chain looks like, let alone lubed it and it still lasted until I sold the bike.

I would prefer a belt over both the chain and the shaft, but there are two major constraints. I'm afraid a belt capable of handling Bandit's torque would be too big/wide. The wider it is the more chance there is for it to get damaged by a stray piece of road debris. It would be easy to carry a spare though...

So here is a picture of what happens when UV rays interact with Pledge, as well as the clear coat on your beautiful motorcycle. With immediate nice results, the effects of time is something that you cannot get back, in some cases, without replacing the part or repainting your bike.

The only product that I use on wind screens as well as helmet visors is Plexus. Wonderful results with no long term effects.

Of course in my opinion.....

I don't see anything in that picture except maybe minimal lens fogging on the right that looks like something I've seen WD40 does to some clear plastics. In any case there is no evidence that it's a result of either UV rays or Pledge. My headlight lens is crystal clear after 140,000Km and cleaning almost exclusively with Pledge. So is my windshield. Cracks and scratches notwithstanding.

The only product that I use on wind screens as well as helmet visors is Plexus. Wonderful results with no long term effects.

Plexus is very good but also not widely available and quite expensive. If I had a $30,000+ bike or a $10,000+ car I might consider it for regular maintenance.

Best way to remove the grease from chain is to remove it with light hydrocarbon solution which would dissolve the grease and after that it could flushed away.

A rug, paper towel or anything else that can't get deep between the links is not sufficient enough, IMO.

Ok. well, listen. I get it for free. After we clean a few watches withit I rebottle it and bring it home. You would not believe how well it cuts the grease. And then it leaves parts looking brand new.
