There are already cures for cancer but curing the disease doesn't make more customers for Big Pharma so it will never be widespread.
Would that success analogy include the Toronto Maple Leafs?

Dead people can't buy more drugs and the current treatments for many virulent cancers only buy you a few extra years in many cases. A cure is just technologically out of reach right now for many cancers, there's no conspiricy to cover up a cure.

Big Pharma has some insidious influence in terms of overprescribing stuff and selling dodgy drugs, but it's pretty absurd to imagine that a research doctor who found the magic cure wouldn't publish anyway. They'd be the person who CURED CANCER. Just as the first company to sell a cancer cure would be known as the company that found the cancer cure - no marketing strategy would ever buy the goodwill and positive press that would generate.
There are lots and lots of very strong incentives for a company and/or doctor to announce a cancer cure.
But again "Cancer" isn't a magical single disease. It's way more likely that if any cure is to be found, it will be by cancer type, or by similar types. So maybe a cure for say, leukemia (or leukemia and lymphoma), but not a cure for lung cancer. Or vice-versa.
