We had the talk.......

... I really wish I didn't live it in the city and somewhere where riding a dirty bike is much easier and trail more accessible. ...
Believe it or not Toronto used to be a great place to ride dirt bikes, all the good places just disappeared.

Exactly! different folks different strokes.... I mean for me the fact that I was able to enjoy riding for all these years is a miracle. i rode tens of thousands of kms I'm happy. maybe one day we could get back on the saddle. But, as for now I don't think my wife would be able to cope God forbid the unthinkable were to happen.

but hey maybe once the kids are older and they're at an age where they dont need to rely on me any longer in that respect then maybe I'll consider it.

In the meantime, have you considered buying an old bike and doing a restoration?

It might be a good hobby to get you through the years of not riding.

I used to ride a Harley I had a Softail Deluxe with Apes and fish tails.... it was slow AF but I had some fun cruising with her... what do you guys have against HD anyways? lol

figure I see it similar to most here
it's not necessarily the bike, it's the owners

the "don't you wish you'd bought a real bike" crowd
usually poseurs that bought their first bike in their 40's
dress up like SOA on the weekends and behave like ass-hats

they are a minorty of HD owners, but more vocal/visible
than motorcyclists that happen to own HD's
and are too busy riding to get involved in that nonsense

Others, like some in this thread, will say 'I'm going to keep doing what I'm doing, and the let the chips fall where they may.'

There's no right or wrong answer in this one as it's a super personal decision. Some people actually consider the feelings of their loved ones and adjust their lifestyle accordingly, some DGAF about anyone or anything besides themselves and what makes them happy. Both are fine. Hell I wish I had a bit more of the latter in me, but it's not who I am.
Its not one extreme or the other as you've stated... I highly doubt any of us say that we DGAF about anyone else but ourselves...

Mitigate the risk by riding less conjested roads, don't ride like a knob, pick decent days, ride for recreation not commuting in the city.

I have two little kids. I have been riding for 20 years... I'm going to keep riding, but choose appropriate times and places to get my kicks. Its a big part of my life.

Happycrappy said it well...

OP. Buy something small and cheap. Take it easy. Ride safe. Grow back into riding. Let your wife get accustomed to it slowly.

You think a sportscar will be safer? Possibly with your kid in it? Not for me... I'll get a pw50 for my daughter when she is ready, and if she wants to.

Risk mitigation. Safety. Constant training to upgrade your skills.

yeah I totally feel you brother.... I think it's me trying to do the right thing. I get exactly where my wife is coming from. I feel that it's in a way selfish of me to just leave my little ones alone to do something exponentially dangerous as riding a motorcycle.

I go to Italy every year to visit my grandmother and I used to ride over there, I've ridden a lot all over Italy, and I know with great certainty that people CAN RIDE AND DRIVE Over there than people over here. I've ridden to Keywest from here, I've done numerous long distance trips. and I know maybe I've pushed my luck far enough and its a sign from above to just leave it, pack it in.

I know my wife knows how much riding means to me. She didnt MAKE ME sell my bikes, I did it because it was the right thing to do. that being said my little ones mean the world over. where does the bike come into this? the bike is still a great part of who I am.... But it's now become an internal struggle as to am I REALLY going to leave my wife and kids for a weekend or a night to go riding alone on with friends and what if God forbid the worse happens, a crash or date i say worse. is it worth keeping my wife in a state of high anxiety every time I go out for a blast? that's what I'm wrestling with. it's so tough ?

I'm also considering a sports car too, something I can take the kids in. something that we can all do together my son is 13 months and my daughter is almost 4 so I mean it's something worth thinking About even though my wife said YES!

4 yrs old sounds like about the right age to get her into dirt biking...

i dressed in regular clothing and wore a full face helmet lol I mainly rode with sport bike riders but I see where you're coming from lol

Bike and kids and family can coexist very well. And you can avoid highways and take the kids out for ice cream when their feet reach the pegs.

My kids love to go for rides.

Now, I have since moved to 4 wheels but, it was a choice. I’ll likely get a bike again but, I’m enjoying the vintage convertible car thing for the time being.

2 wheels is in some people’s blood and it’s in mine like many others.

When I took my lady out for a ride along the parkway, she loved it.

But she didn’t enjoy it much more than a couple of hours.

Get a bike and enjoy it. And your family will to.

What is wrong with kids in a sports car?

I drive like a sane man when my kids are in the car.

I think everyone is a little deluded if they think thats the safe option. I get it
Airbags, crumple zones, roll cages -a Miata for example is a rollong tin can.

Not saying anyone shouldn't do activities with their kids, just saying sport riding or sport driving has its challenges and risks. Riding my bike solo, its my ass if I make a mistake, no one elses. I'm not much for passengers regardless if its a bike or a sportscar.

Its just the mentality of "bike bad. Irresponsible! Selfish! Two little kids!" And "oh, ripping in sportscar is okay.. "

I agree, with kids: ride sane, drive sane.

Just seems people freak thinking bikes are murder machines, but since cars for most are a necessity, they are viewed as safe.

I like the people who buy a SUV saying they bought it because it's so much more safe than a regular car, when SUV'S flip over so easily.

Nothing is safe if you're an asshat. Bikes are inherently more dangerous, we all know that. And mitigating the risk is something I'm fairly good at I'd like to say.

But as always, it's the other road users to worry about.

Not sure if anyone said that sports cars will be used to rip around with kids in the back. I wouldn't be irresponsible with my little ones in the back, but when on my own I may push it a bit further than normal, and the risk is MUCH lower than on a motorcycle. But I don't think that's much of a debate there.

@matt365 You're right, I made it seem like only 2 extremes. Lots of space in the middle.

And I'm quite sure the electric vehicle debate is the longest thread....but I may be wrong.

Yes that's a reasonable statement sir. I agree there. I have. nothing against going out for a ride staying local and just doing it alot more reasonably than I did years ago no doubts.

I'm also in the car collecting hobby myself I have a few vintage wheels. ?

Still suggested reading up on Paranoia before the next party, do these folks have any other unfounded fears that you need to adopt?
Dogs perhaps, are they terrified of dogs, a lot of people apparently have an unfounded fear of dogs, most likely instilled in them by somebody else.
Boating, you can drown doing that, possibly need to add that to the list.

... I think you can see where I'm going with this one, riding motorcycles is their paranoia not yours and paranoia is a symptom that relates to mental disorder, it is not a diagnosis.

Here is my youngest on the last drive of 2019. A little bigger than the pic on the Buell.

Funny enough, my wife thinks the yellow MGB is much safer than a motorcycle. Sure it has bumpers and indeed has more visibility than most motorcycles but, if we are in a wreck, it won’t be pretty. I’ll let her keep thinking she is safer. Lol

As for SUVs that provide over confidence for drivers.......Dec 1 during the ice rain, I was “that guy”.

Single vehicle accident, no one around me, no distractions. AWD and proper snow tires driving below the speed limit in the right lane. Lost traction and couldn’t recover.

It was fairly low speed but, still ended up in the ditch on its roof.

Side curtain airbags deployed, written off.

I have 2 kids aged 12 and 13. My wife and I both ride, together and alone.
It has actually crossed my mind when we leave together "what if we don't come back?". I sure hope I never have to answer that question.
We generally ride backroads, rarely the highway. We both tend to ride 10-20 over where appropriate. We both avoid large groups, usually 2 to 4 riders. Our bikes are always fully up on maintenance. We do what we can to mitigate risk however this is my life and I only have one. I intend to live my life. I don't want to die waiting for "my life".

On its roof, like I said.
Most cars don't flip like that.

Manufacturers always include, what they call roof rack.

Real purpose is to flip vehicles back onto the wheels if sliding down the pavement.

SUV's are inherently more dangerous.
But people think they are so safe up high in their cage.

My F350 would squish it like a bug and a transport truck would squish my F350 like a bug, but lots of transport drivers get squished like a bug.
:| There is no safe haven on a public road, we should all be terrified, but don't let it worry you too much.
