Watch your six

I just had an experience, the closest call I have ever had in all my years of riding, that illustrates why we motorcyclists always have to watch our 6. Slowing to make a right turn on a country road I use my brakes, even flashed them, and my signal light as I downshifted into 2nd and slowed. I had flashed my brakes ahead of time and put my signal on as soon as I started to slow. I do this routinely so that people behind me have plenty of warning I am slowing down to turn. This time, I saw the sedan behind me was not slowing down, it was coming at me fast, driven by a young woman who at the last minute swerved to the right while braking and ending up in the ditch in front of me. If I had turned right she would have smashed right into me, likely killing me, at the very least severing my right leg from my body but more likely killing me due to speed. Of course, if she had not swerved to the right she would have rear-ended me also likely killing me. I completed my turn and fortune had us meet up at another intersection 10 minutes later where I saw her crying hard, balling her eyes out as she pulled up along side me. I wonder if she was texting and that's what happened. If she had swerved to the left this all would have been safe but swerving to the right, where I was about to turn, would have killed me had I not been intently watching my 6. But, luck played a part in this because if I had tried to move right because I saw her barreling down I would have put myself in her path. And if she had not swerved at the last minute, presumably because she looked up, I would have been killed. It was all up to the gods.

Glad to hear you're ok. She was probably distracted with her cellphone and luckily she swerved and missed you.

Ride safe.

how did she end up beside you 10 minutes after going into a ditch ? you didnt say anything to her ?
need more info !

She didn't Crash her car. Just drove into a small ditch at the side of the road. The turn I was making was into Kirby side road east. She must have continued straight on Jane north and gone east on king Vaughan. When I was her again it was at Bathurst and king Vaughan.

what can I say! I too have made mistakes like this while driving...not using cell phone but driving while I was dead tired after work...

...glad you are ok!

Glad you're safe and we're not hearing about this in another forum section.

Now...how loud is your pipe?

Glad you are okay
Always my worst fear getting nailed from behind....only had one similar nowhere near so dramatic and I knew it was going to happen so had time to move over ( over loaded rental moving van with a tralier and dufus driver - had my eye on him constantly coming across HWY 7 west bound east of the city.
He finally lost it coming down a steep hill and shuddered to a stop a few yards beyond the spot I had been occupying.

I've always been concerned turning right that someone would miss a signal and attempt to pass...good on you for being alert....swerving to the right of you tho......gads...

Glad you're okay. Yet another stark reminder that we all take a big risk when we throw a leg over for the love of the sport, no matter how well we ride, due to distracted or just plain dumb drivers.

Was she still texting when she pulled up beside you? This is a dangerous habit that people can't seem to shake. Lucky for you that it came out OK.

The big guy above us all is watching after you. There is still a purpose for you to be around. Give it a thought.

You seem to have done everything correctly while she did everything wrong. But after not killing you, while in the wrong, could you not have pulled over to check on her. Or if you wanted, have a chat?

Doesn't driving school program students to "Never swerve to the left (unseen oncoming traffic.)" Could have been a number of things but no use dwelling on why just be glad you're undamaged and count your blessings. I'd imagine the stress alone from potentially killing someone would make a girl cry like that.

Phew! Always a scary situation.... had an idiot in a black BMW almost nail me from behind at Hwy 20 & Barton - near the Walmart, I came to a stop, was watching in my mirrors... saw him floor it up behind me and nail some construction cones as he swerved last minute to avoid hitting me. Could have been bad if he kept going straight.... really wish people would pay attention but I know that'll never happen so we just have to pay double attention!

We may be evolutionary precursors for eyes in back of head.

Course there is this

Reevu MSX1 Helmet - Solid Colors
The world's first rear-view helmet! Reevu has been the industry leader in rear view technology with their patented mirror system, manufactured from a reflective polycarbonate material rather than glass! The polycarbonate material is almost impossible to break, weighs less than glass and provides additional safety and comfort to the rider. The mirror system essentially bends the light around the shell of the helmet, offering a clear view of what's behind. The Reevu System works just like a car's rear view mirror offering awareness of the road ahead and behind without making a conscious effort as both are simultaneously in your field of view.

Solid advice. Always ALWAYS watch your back when you're coming to a stop. If I'm not the first person at an intersection, I usually try and stay in-between (not in the middle) cars. In case the driver behind me decides to no stop in time, he'll be making contact with the car ahead of me.

At a full stop it would be something similar to this ->
