Warning: Bank Machines can't accurately count the new $20 bills

There have been a few articles circulating about this, but now I experienced this. I went across the street to use the TD Bank machine, withdrew $360 and only got $240 back. Half old bills, half new.

I went to the nearest branch because the phone line was busy, they told me this has been happening at random. They won't be upgrading the bank machines until the new bills are in total circulation.

I will be covered for my $120, but have to wait the 3-5 days so they can open the machine and do a balance check.

If the discrepancy was $100 or less, they would have given my money back right on the spot. So note to everyone: be careful of the amounts you withdraw and save yourself the headache/needless wait.

I havent had that prob but even when i count by hand the bills stick together. Those bills are too slippery for my liking

Those new bills are garbage.... the teller told me they had to buy new bill counters for every branch. So they have one for the new bills, one for the old bills. The difference between the two is too weird that they don't trust one machine to accurately count both. Has to be configured for the bill size/material.

They give you an option to get a receipt, might be a good idea to say 'yes' to that until they get things straightened out.

Yup, I do the same. I keep all my receipts for 3-5 days to make sure no discrepancies show up after the transaction.

I accidently tore a few of the new bills. I didn't think they can rip so easy.

This is very true. New bills are very slippery. I count 5 times before depositing in bank.

Proceeds from the sale of drugs, or working under the table? :D

(I dislike everything about the new notes - they not only feel wrong, they smell like **** ).

I love them, and I say good to us for progress. Just because there's going to be a little hump to get used to them, it will work out better for everyone in the long run.

But they have less coke and fecal matter on them.

Agreed.

The stupid thing is the banks, ATM vendors and manufacturers of all other equipment that accept and dispense bills KNEW these new bills have been coming for a long time and waited until the last minute to perform the necessary upgrades (in most cases, it's a simple firmware update).

The new bills are only sticky/slippery (some say one, some say the other) when they're new. It just takes getting used to because the texture isn't the same. Wait until the've been in circulation for a while and the bills become a bit ruffled, they'll be easier to handle.

Well I'm gonna always withdraw from ATMs. Will always complain money is missing and will probably get the money from people who never noticed they were short. Hooray for dumb people. I kid.

Mostly the banks problem. Little headache for us big one for them

This is a poor excuse...... why "wait" for something to be old, ruffled so it can be easier to handle when the old generation was easy to handle and had no counting/machinery problems right out of the printing machine.

And it isn't just a firmware update, they have to be configured (and some machines can't be..... banks had to buy new bill counters). And even if they knew the bills were coming for a long time, they wouldn't have known how they would react in the machines until they were released in mass.

Twice I almost gave away an extra $40 because the new $20 bills stuck together. I think it's because the braille goes into each other and the static from the plastic. Someone also told me if they're wet it's worse and I believe that.

Yes, the braille messes things up, and there's about 3 different textures/material used. The main body, the clear plastic and then the slim body that continues after that. Never tried it when wet, but I hear they're "waterproof". A guy at the bank showed up with a washing-machine'd $100 bill and there wasn't enough left to issue a replacement.

They're going to have to re-invent the thumb-cover for manual counting because they won't be working with these new bills :P

Can you imagine all those poor folks that had to buy billfolds because the governments stopped using gold and silver coins.....

an older lady in the grocery store was telling the cashier that the bank teller showed her rubbing a $100 bill together produces a maple syrup smell. We now have scratch and sniff money :)

saw an article last night on msn saying that aftrer the penny goes this year the nickel will be following. Won't be long until we only have these bills and loonies/toonies in our pockets
