VRRA at Calabogie

I went to the VRRA event on Sunday at Calabogie.

I have to say, the VRRA do put on a really good show and I’m a huge fan of their P1 and P2 classes. It’s really nice to see machines from that era being used in earnest, and not just sitting in a garage collecting dust.

The nice thing about the VRRA is its mixed class racing. They have professionals like Louie Raffa and ex professionals mixed with amateurs. They also have really well prepped ultra-competitive race bikes mixed with equipment that would only have been competitive 40 or 50 years ago. I love watching this stuff. The smell, sounds, etc. it brings back a lot of memories going to Shannonville and Mosport with my Dad when I was a kid. To me it’s the true sign of a good rider when the slow guy can hold a racing line, and the faster guy can pick a way through safely. You even see that in Moto GP.

They also had Canadian Super Bike Lightweight there for one of their rounds, and they very generously mixed the classes to give them extra races.

I was there early Sunday morning and I happened to catch the riders meeting. There was a complete prick of a kid with his mother whining that people in the vintage classes were getting in his way and that he should start first from pole position in the mixed vintage/CSBK classes. I also noticed he was in P4-lightweight and that during the race Daniel Rinfret (VRRA Rider) lapped him on his 650 Hawk within 3 laps. Maybe if his skill was a great as his ego he would be riding in MotoGP. The guy and his mother made such a big deal about this, and the fact that he was also missing from one grid sheet. Mistakes happen - talk to registration and I’m sure if there is an issue, they will be more than happy to fix it fix it.

I have to applaud that VRRA Competition Co-ordinator for keeping his cool. I would have kicked the guys ass out of the event. You don’t swear at, or berate volunteers period. Regardless if they work for the club, or are marshals, or medical staff, etc. These people work very hard for very little recognition in order to put on an event. I used to be assistant Competition Co-ordinator at Mission and believe me, it’s a lot of work.

I'm certainly not saying that all CSBK riders were like that, I just thought it was really sad that this kid is an example of the sort of entitled brats we are collectively raising as a nation... Me first, fook you...

Having said all that it was a great days racing. Beautiful weather and some awesome machines. I particularly enjoyed Dave Roper who brought out some bikes from his stable, the awesome vintage Rudge, and Doug Forbes on that immaculate BMW. Very, very nice indeed.

It was also a beautiful ride. I left home just after 3:00 am and caught the sun rise along Highway 35. Had breakfast at Timmies in Tweed and watched an amazing sun set along Highway 7 on the way home.

I'm really looking forward to the next rounds at Shannonville and Mosport.

I’ve been meaning to get out to a VRRA event for years. I actually bought my RD250 off a former VRRA President (who generously brought the bike down to Toronto from North Bay) and the CB350four from a family connected to another VRRA member.

Glad to hear you had a great day...now you’ve got me wanting to go too

I have to agree. I plan to be at the Mosport event as my wife will be visiting her parents.

I love old bikes and always tried to make it to the VRRA and CVMG when I could. There is just something about the noise and the smell that you don't get with a modern bike. Its become very sanitized. I believe even CSBK lightweight bikes are limited to a pipe and some suspension changes. There is no smell of "R" to get the heart pumping... LOL

He wouldn't happen to have been riding an EX400 Kawasaki would he ?

I would imagine that a great number are riding these :)

Went to my first vrra event at mosport(as a spectator) almost two years ago.I hope I can make it back this year.
As already stated, the vrra put on a great show ,"the noise, the smell"and mosport is one hell of a venue

I usually make it out to the Mosport event each year as I have a few buddies that race this series. The vibe is always great and has tons of fun people to chat with.
Where CSBK is more business/pretentious, the VRRA is mostly 4 reasons a year for the lads to get out together on the track and party it up at night.

No, there are only 3 Ninja 400s in the field. The aforementioned rider rides a CBR500, and is actually a very humble and down to earth kid, who has "Hockey Parents".

And Rinfret didn't lap him, Dan was running 2:15s and the rider was running 2:25s (10 seconds is a lot, but 85hp hawk vs 43hp CBR500)

It was ashame that a few people spoke out of line. As a rider who was out there, (and a former VRRA member) the CSBK riders need to realize how lucky they are with the sheer amount of track time they get per weekend, and have the ability to get their crashed bikes after each session.

I have friends both sides of the fence so i won't comment on your first paragraph. However your quote above was part of the problem where his bike was left in an impact zone, from what i can gather.
"Lucky with the amount of track time given" They are paying for it, so i don't understand how they are lucky. LW class is definitely not cheap on the wallet, as they running an extra round compared to the rest of the CSBK brigade.

I AM one of those CSBK lwt riders. Its not as expensive as you would think. And it was cheaper this weekend than a normal National weekend. And the overall cost of the class is peanuts compared to the other national classes. Am SBK rider spent more money on tires at Round 1, then I will in entry costs, and tires for the whole season.

All weekend bikes were left in impact zones, which has nothing to do with the VRRA and has to do with the Marshal team in that corner.

What I meant by lucky, is at national events where there are not as many classes, and if there is an issue (red flag, or bike pickup required) there isn't a huge impact on track time. In the VRRA with 20+ classes, you have to have scheduled bike pick up times. So CSBK riders on normal CSBK weekends are lucky with the amount of time they have on track, and down time.

LOL.... wait what? You were at rider's meeting on Sunday?.... Daniel Rinfret lapped him on Sunday?..... I suggest you get your story straight before coming on here and slandering people

Edit : by the way, there were never any " mixed vintage/CSBK classes "

I'm racing in AHRMA at the moment with a CB350 and RZ350 and they have about 26 classes, and sub classes within those classes.

It really must be a scheduling nightmare, especially trying to accommodate people running multiple bikes/classes. Not a job I envy.

I still think the VRRA do an amazing job given the sheer logistics of the number of races and riders they have to manage. Makes Moto GP look downright simple :)

I also think that you do get a lot more track time at the VRRA than AHRMA

Not taking any sides here, but to me the unsung hero's of any race weekend are the organisers and the marshals.

Its a lot of work for minimum payback, sometimes its just lunch, sometimes the doing is the reward its self - and they are out there all day in anything from pouring rain to +35 temperatures with humidity.

It takes a lot of commitment in terms of time, training, travel so treat them nice :)

A friend who runs a small brew pub brought beer to Willow Springs for the marshals. It probably didn't cost him any more than a couple of hundred bucks and he was probably able to write it off, but it seemed like it was very much appreciated

You don’t have a problem with that? That’s downright dangerous.

Dear TK4: No, Scott, it wasn't me, but I do enjoy that you still think of me so often. xo Hope you're well darling.

To the OP. Matt isn't entitled. And he absolutely didn't get lapped. His mum was fired up, and if you'd been there on Saturday, you'd know why. One class was a mixed grid start, and it was carnage. There were multiple red flags. On Sunday, they made that race a waved start, it was a much more sensible way to run it. That's why she was vocal. Matt didn't say a thing.

Another racer I don't know asked if it could be a waved start, with the CSBK guys at the front, I'm not sure I agree with the csbk guys at the front part, but the waved start was a good suggestion (and one the VRRA took on).

I race with Matt on the regular, and he's one of the nicest, most humble, hard-working and helpful 17 year-old's you'll ever meet. He's also a bloody good racer.

We lit up about registration, because we were called out for being in the wrong race, when the mistake was actually a registration error. As a group, we got a lot of flack that wasn't deserved on the weekend, but we also were all suffering a large amount of culture shock. Nobody swore, that I remember anyway. I, as well as a couple of other LTWT guys went with Kirby after the meeting to the office and sorted out the issue with registration.

The VRRA is excellent, the fans are seriously passionate, and the LTWT guys all had a steep learning curve on the weekend, which led to plenty of angst. But that's all normal racing stuff, that any true fan understands.

As a final point, I'll say this: I don't think the national CSBK Ltwt group and the VRRA are a good cultural mesh. The VRRA is motivated to make races happen as quickly and efficiently as possible to accommodate the large number of classes and entrants. The CSBK is a different beast altogether.

We're all out here enjoying our sport, and most of us settle our grievances in person, at the track, the right way. For an outsider to come and snipe at a young kid inaccurately isn't right. Matt's a good kid, and you're being unfair to him. Matt didn't even say anything at that meeting! Which is why you're slagging him off is so bloody ridiculous.

If we go back next year, there won't be quite such a culture shock, and the teething problems vented at the rider's meeting won't be there. PS: Rider's meetings are for rider's and staff to talk through the weekend, including it's issues. I'm sorry if that's too much for one spectactor's sensitive ears to bear.

I just tried reading the VRRA rule book, holy! with all due respect, got enough rules there? Hats off to those who can make it work.

... oh and they said you might have to use a non-period solution to meet the noise regulations but never said what those limits are as far as I could find through reading or by test search, anybody know what the dB limit is and how they test it? <- or link if you have one plz.

You realize that the OP, "Clem the bright one" thinks that a certain Auzzie is Matt? He was standing beside Matt's mom during the rider's meeting

Then he's either got very much the wrong end of the stick, or he's being flagrantly dishonest. If I'd realized he meant me, I would have answered differently above.

Especially with the "lapped in three laps" part, because neither Matt, nor I participated in Sunday's mixed class races.

Here's the full breakdown of the conversation for those who give a ****:
Kirby: People were going out in the wrong class... not calling out names, but it was the lightweight guys.
Me: "Hey, Sorry Kirby, but that's bollocks, because we registered, but we weren't on the grid sheet, and it's not okay for you to call us out and make out like we're a pack of idiots when this is a registration error."
Kirby: come up and sort it out after the meeting - (which we did)

Then, other comments about the bike being left in an impact zone - from Lisa.
Then, a proposal about switching to a waved start, from some other dude (I don't even know who)
Then, another dude (again I don't know who) says, "can the lightweight peoples start in front" (this was admittedly stupid)

So for this bloke to call out one person is inaccurate and I think deliberately misleading.

Again, none of the conversations he's referencing came from the same people, nor the same family. And given that my voice is a lot different to everyone elses'... I wonder if he was ACTUALLY there, or just doing a bit of "broken telephone" on stuff he heard from someone else?

Best popcorn entertainment race thread in a while.

I swear I read a thread where bickle racing stated he turned 2:18's at bogie - on a ninja 250 - eyebrow raise. Correct me if Im wrong mr bickle. this lap time would be some good incentive for the lwt riders to get more seat time at bogie.

As an uninvolved spectator Im a bit surprised with the thread despite the entertainment. Clem never mentioned anyone's name. I don't see any "slander". Others mentioned names, but not clem. Now it seems there may have been a mistaken identity? ... just saying.

Did you really turn 18's mr bickle? or is my old brain memory fading lol. I do believe I remember correctly.

Best luck to all the lwt racers.
