Glad you passed, it sucks you had to spend $40 twice because you failed the first time,

Wasn't your initial advice to "rent" a smaller bike to pass? So by your logic it's smarter to:
Cost of licence exam: $40
Cost of rental bike: ~$85
Total: $125

or
Cost of licence exam first try: $40
Cost of licence exam 2nd try: $40
Total: $80
You could even go for it one more time and still be under (though it's added time and possibly time off work).

And with the second option, at least you have the added confidence that you passed the exam on the bike you will be riding for the next while.
