Vancouver to Toronto - Help a thick aussie

Have you looked into RV rental rates? That trip is going to cost a small fortune.

To best be able to serve you I need to know how thick.

Good comment. Canada is very seasonal with regards to tourism. We have to make our money in half the year so most rates are high. I'm not sure how Auz compares.

Toronto isn't a bad or cruel city except for the road conditions but there is a lot of attitude. Address snobs, make of vehicle snobs, I only drink brand X water snobs etc.

BC is fine in April, just take your time. After Calgary/Edmonton, you're going to have trouble staying awake. Why you'd leave Australia for Toronto boggles the mind. It is literally the *** pit of Canada. There's no way to sugar coat it.

If it was me. I would consider the train as an option. I have driven through the mountains and I have taken the train. The train IMO is more scenic BUT it does not stop when you want to stop...

Once through the mountains, either way I would get on a plane. The prairies are beautiful mid summer, but even then do you really need to see the same things for multiple days? Well worth skipping. In April they will be even less impressive....

As for the train as long as it goes through the mountains during the day it is pretty awesome. And you can do it sitting in the bar car! Downside is it does not stop on your schedule. Train is expensive.

If you decide to drive a one-way rental car to Calgary may be the way to go. You can stop where you want, maybe plan the trip so you can book some rooms along the way. Take your time and enjoy the mountains. Downside in April is you may still hit significant snow, I will go out on a limb and say you don't have a lot of mountain snow driving experience???

In Calgary, get on a plane.

I think a one way RV rental is going to be nuts, then you have gas etc. I bet the options above are cheaper and will be more fun/less stressful. One question though, how much stuff will be with you?

Toronto is not as bad as the haters make it out to be... They are just mad they waited for the housing bubble to burst, and it hasn't, yet...

Vancouver is pretty but ridiculously overpriced even compared to Toronto. Toronto, on the other hand, is not as bad as people make it out to be. It's just a huge, busy city, economic centre of the country. What do you expect? If you don't like it then there are plenty nice, small communities located within a reasonable distance of the city core. People complain too much. Riding roads could be better but with little effort you can still make it to some awesome twisties.

As for the route, going through the States will be cheaper and faster (higher speed limits) if you can. More interesting too. At least you can stop at the Yellowstone Park for example. If you go through the prairie provinces, there is nothing there, just a straight, flat highway.

For Those asking, we've got quotes for the $2500 mark, including unlimited Km's, US travel and the one way charge.

We looked at hiring a car, but when adding accomodation, meals etc etc it, on paper, worked out more than doing the RV route, also the RV means we don't have the pressure of missing accomodation due to weather or what ever.

Something else i've thought about but not chased yet is buying a car in vancouver, we'll need one sooner or later. Spend a week in the vancouver area then drive to Toronto. We have visa's for the US so we may even pop over the border and go that way. We still have 10 months to plan it all.

We're only looking at Toronto as i've got my conversion training lined up with a mob there, but after that i'll go anywhere the work is.

The price sounds good, almost too good and the meal / accomodation savings will offset the higher gas consuption. Good luck.
