Using the "choke" and a little bit of throttle to get moving......

I was laughing my *** off yesterday and shaking my head after reading that. You would think that the editor would have noticed as well.

I guess she might have to search for another job as she doesn't seem remember what was told to her before. Imagine if this was a political column and she made some little mistake in wording. Could really get her and the paper in trouble.

But I forgive her somewhat as she is quite cute. ;)
 
That's one special fuel injected bike if it's got a choke.

I always use choke to turn the bike off and so far it works fine.

You mean the kill switch? You should get in the habit of just using the key to turn the bike off. I know in the class they teach to use the kill switch, but it's really only there for emergencies. A lot of people have had times where they forget their key in the bike and leave it because they used the kill switch to shut it down. If you get in the habit of always using the key to shut it down then you are also sure you took the key out and have it with you.. When turning off the bike you should always stop, put it in neutral, then turn off the key. No need to kill switch it.

And then have some idiot promptly hop on the bike for a picture, and roll it forward off the sidestand and onto the ground. No thanks, i'll leave it in first.

That's what the steering lock is for. Can't roll it when the bars are turned all the way left with the key off and to the lock position.... unless they push it up to the right, then try to push it around in circles.. not likely.

I can see a day one newbie using the choke to practice clutch feel but after day one it shouldn't be necessary.

Using the choke to shut off a motor makes it easier to start the next time but the gas also washes the oil off the cylinder walls leading to premature wear.

I've been doing it wrong all this time and using the clutch. Thank good for this article, it has shown me the true path.
 
I don't understand. Did a hipster just read Zen And The Art Of blah blah and feel inspired to get on a bike?

I had to use the reverse gear to get out of my parking space today. You will need to use it one day. I guarantee it.
 
The "choke" bit was pretty amusing, but forgivable for an excited first timer (although a journalist should be double checking that sort of stuff). Hopefully she prints a correction next week, since the folks at RTI didn't teach her that. Does the 125 even have a choke? I thought it was fuel injected.

Also, Z&TAOMM is a terrible book. Better to quote Proficient Motorcycling instead, I think. Bikes don't need half-baked philosophy to be cool.
