I know you guys like your "scams" and I don't believe Ive seen this one here before.

I haven't sold a used car in a long time, but interesting how crafty these guys can be.

TEXT/WHATAPP CONVO:

Buyer: you have a car for sale

me : yes

Buyer : any repairs on the vehicle?

me : no its mint

Buyer: I need to see a "report", just follow this link here (a spoof link of some sort to a VIN search site), type in your vin, pay the fee, and send me the report and I will buy your car.

Me : here is the VIN, purchase your own report, if you find any red flags, (I know there won't be), I will refund your money.

Buyer : c'mon, i'm going to buy this car, spend all this money, not even haggle with you, and you won't give me report?

Me: Come see the car, then if you like it, I will get a CAR FAX report.

Buyer : I need you to use the link I sent you.

Me: Sorry, car is sold now, bye.

That was the gist of the convo, there was lots of non essential talk in between texts, but you see the point here. My tip off was I was getting a whats app, and a text at the same time from two different guys and they seem to ask the exact same questions and used the same MO.

Old scam:

What are they scamming though? Money? Vin number? What's their gain from this scam.

My first inclination is "who the hell is dumb enough to click a potential buyer's link for the purpose of spending money on a report?"

Then I remember family members who are older and have asked for help when they click links in spam/phishing emails.

Do they start off with an actual description or mention of the actual item for sale nowadays? That's always been my first tip off that it's almost guaranteed to be a scam.

yes, they do. at least in my case. and they try convincing you, going on first name basis, telling you what you want to hear, "no haggle, I'll take it, hold it for me"
