Used bike purchase question

I'm a noob and I just purchased my first used bike two weeks ago. The seller rode the bike over to my place on Saturday and I got my temporary plate on Monday. Like nearace said, get the ownership, proof of insurance and then go to a Service Ontario office and pay the taxes and they'll issue you a plate right there. They'll put a temporary sticker on it with a big red "T" and it's valid for 10 days, then you can ride it to get it certified. I'm picking up my bike tonight night, just got certified and then I'm heading to the Service Ontario office to get my permanent sticker.

you wont have a plate till you get to the MTO with the ownership and uvip

but many will purchase bike, go to MTO right away, go back put on plate which has a T sticker and you can get it home and ride legal.

or borrow a plate and ride illegally.

or trailer/van

If you decide to borrow a plate, or use your own old plate registered to another bike... Just remember to get insurance first and you're good to go.

If the police stops you. the ticket for having the wrong plate is a lot less $$$ than the ticket for riding with no insurance

Easiest is to negotiate drop-off at the shop of your choice for the certification work as part of the sale. Most sellers are willing to do this.

Interesting info about the temp sticker, though.

agreed this would be easiest but not always convenient. Some of the bikes I am considering are not exactly local. Could be 200kms away

The only way to get a "T" sticker is if the current ownership lists it as "FIT". Just another little tidbit.

I don't think they're too picky unless I got lucky. The woman at the Service Ontario desk just checked off that it was "fit" sight unseen and gave me the plate and the sticker no questions asked and I was only one of two people there first thing when it opened. All she seemed to care about was processing the paperwork efficiently. I was in and out in about 10 minutes.
