Used bike online listings.

I find kijiji is much nicer and easier to browse but compared to FB the selection is much smaller. I buy almost exclusively from kijiji.

That said I listed a bunch of Wing parts on FB and kijiji. Everything I sold went thru FB. Crickets from kijiji.

It's not like it's a surprise to anyone that Kijiji will be the the next Craigslist. It's a given. The real question is what'll come after FB Marketplace?

My favorite is the ads you can tell are poorly written and photographed on purpose but you can also tell they are legit in your area. You just know their spouse told them to sell the bike, they didn't want to so they post a lousy ad and then say "See, Honey? It just isn't selling. I guess I'll have to keep it."

The other thing that irks me is sellers that you need to coerce into actually showing/selling what they've got listed.

I'm looking for a self contained flat panel display right now for a home automation project and found a guy selling what I think would work, but I asked a simple question - to get a photo of the label on the back so I can see exactly what make/model the display is, since of course, it wasn't actually listed in the ad. Dude ghosted me since. That was a week ago, panel is still for sale. Apparently even the slightest amount of effort isn't worth anyones time anymore I guess.

Just had a similar experience. Seller posted a single picture of a dust-covered bike that looked like it might be mint underneath. Asked if he could wash it and take more pics, he said "No sorry, up for quick sale, bike has scratches". Asked for close-ups of any damage, he said "It is dusty, it's in a garage used for work, it's an old beater motorcycle. Your welcome to meet me to come see it." Sorry, not driving 2 hours to be disappointed.

Before FB marketplace became the 800 pound gorilla, I was all-in on Kijiji. But not only did FB marketplace come along, but Kijiji went in the toilet - sooooo many business ads now that are keyword spammed to the point where it's impossible to find some things anymore. Try searching for tires, for example - almost any search term you put in just returns pages and pages and pages of business ads, half of which don't even have the size you're looking for but have just keyword spammed so their ads get preference in the search results.

Meanwhile, I'm looking for the little private seller who's had a set of tires in their garage that they're selling for a good price, and their ad gets so buried it's impossible to find unless you scroll through 30 pages of business ads.

It's funny, in BC when I was there, everyone used Craiglist. Was a real shock coming to Ontario to find everyone on Kijiji. I personally much preferred the minimalist and clean interface of Craigslist, but considering both are being killed by FB Marketplace, it's clear that interface isn't what drives people to a site.

I personally hate Marketplace for having a terrible search function, forcing the use of Messenger, and making it needlessly difficult/near impossible to search listings provincially and nationally. It's also Bookface, the worst of the internet distilled.

But having sold off a bunch of unused bits and pieces through the fall, (as well as selling an Aprilia and buying a Guzzi) at least 90% of sales came via Marketplace. I posted everything on both, but Kijiji just had a lot less action. I have a few search alerts active there as well, and the hits coming back are fewer and fewer, so it's clear the site use is dying off fast...

We have Gumtree here in Aus ( and elsewhere in the world )
and I much prefer it to the hot mess interface that FB is. I did sell one bike on Gumtree and other bits and bobs but reluctantly FB gets the responses.
I am also fascinated by the crazy variety of stuff on sale at FB. Scoring a $150-200 Apple Watch 6 for $60 made me happy. $1200+ of Lego including some discontinued for $400 were all satisfying finds.
Buddy scored a gorgeous 2014 Honda CB650F for $3k!!!! ( it's listed at the proper price of $6300 now ) only 20k km on it.

I scored a $1600 MacBook Air M2 2 months old for a thousand....impulse buy sez the seller.
i do find making ads a bit easier on FB but I hate being locked into the ecosystem - people seem reluctant to leave it and move to email.
Gumtree is a much better system where you can work within Gumtree and it is copied to email and responding to either works.

I would have liked to keep in contact with Kiji but I get this
429 Too Many Requests :cautious:

One entire summer of one of the covid years I got that. Clear your browser cache and all your temporary internet ********, and it'll work again. At least it did for me.

Just make sure you remember all your passwords for all of the things before you do that.

On Chrome, I usually just delete the data for a specific site/domain that's giving me problems:

Settings - Privacy and security - Third-party cookies - See all site data and permissions

Or just use this URL: chrome://settings/content/all

Then use the second (upper right) search field to find your site and delete everything or individual objects

Well I ended up finding my new ride on FB Marketplace, a dealer posting.

Say hello to my new to me 2010 BMW R1200RT

I was shopping for a new bike in 2008 and had it narrowed down to a Honda ST1300 or a BMW 1200RT. I got a killer deal on the ST1300 that I just couldn’t turn down. I always regretted not getting the BMW after riding one.

ST1300, FJR1300 and 1200RT were all on my watch list. Some ads just never replied, I missed out on a diff RT but I think I lucked out with this one. It was higher priced but it is newer & has just had a major service, was a one owner bike bought from & always serviced at this dealer.

Peak Powersports London (Wolf BMW), yeah there was some wiggle room in the price and I paid less than asked. Price was less than what some private sale were asking for same year bikes.

Lovely bike.

I think dealers can be motivated to move on price, particularly in trying financial times. Inventory is only worth something when you sell it, and when you've got overhead and expenses you need to move product.

A private seller, particularly with some brands can set a high price for any number of reasons including outstanding loans and perceived rarity/value.
