US Gov't should have let them croak while they had the chance....

The Volt interior feels like Fisher Price was the main consultant on design based on how much plastic is in there. I know they need to cut on weight but it felt worse than the nastiest GM interiors of the last 20 years.

The Prius was quite possibly one of the worst cars I have ever driven in terms of blind spots. There are 2 big ones in the A pillars! there should NEVER be blind spots in the A Pillars!

Wow, I went on GM's website after reading this thread...and I hope you get some money back from the governement or something else cause so far:

Volt: 43 000$
Civic 19 00$
Difference: 24 000$

Let say you do 20 000km a year, with the civic, with the fuel at 1,70 (its going to be there) and a consomption of 7L/100km that mean 2 380$....

So, in theory, you need to do 200 000km's before starting saving on fuel, and this is only if you do NOT put any fuel in the volts. At that points, just buy a Volks TDI, it's cheaper and you get more power.

Of course, it's just a beginning, one day it will be cheaper, but for now...I'll buy a civic instead.

PS: My math aren't perfect, I did it super fast just to build an example.

It's just too bad they canned the EV-1 back in the day. It could have really made a difference.

Ya you get domething like $9000 back from the government.

The Volt is actually a pretty good car. I rented them a few times in LA and the Bay Area

Fit and finish are good and the cabin was very quiet. Pickup was great.

My main complaint would be weight. It's almost 4000 lbs and you can definitely feel it. We took it up on Skyline Blvd and it does push into the corners. The Prius' I've driven also feel heavy.

I don't think I would buy one. Not because it's GM but because it's a Hybrid. I just don't see any advantage in terms of long term operating costs v's purchase price. Give me a good gasoline engine any day.

You hit the nail on the head.

There is no real cost savings in comparison to purchase price. ($10k + difference)
There is no immediate $ benefit.
The scare of maintenance in an unproven technology is enough to scare off most buyers (and it has).
Most consumers will not use the car its whole life, and won't recoup any gas-savings from the original price they paid.

If this car was 3k or so more than a similar gas powered car, it would (could) be a hit. It will take a while before the technology becomes that cheap.

Car and Driver does a back to back test of the Volt and Cruze........

"Even after you’ve cashed in the federal government’s generous $7500 tax credit and applicable state or local subsidies, the Volt costs roughly 50 percent more than the Cruze. And, in any given lifetime, there’s no way to make a payback pencil out. Based on EPA combined-mileage ratings, $4 per gallon for gas, and $0.112 per kWh for electricity, the savings attributable to driving the Volt 100,000 miles solely on electricity over the gas-powered Cruze is only $8089."

Plus the inconvenience of plugging it in every 100k.
But I'm glad there's an alternative. It means there won't be a monopoly on crude
