Hey guys, just wondering what you think. Currently riding a 2017 fz07 (first bike) that I’ve had for 2 years and looking for a bit more power. I am looking at the mt09 and z900 as possible upgrades but was wondering how much of a difference an exhaust and ecu reflash would make. It would probably be cheaper to mod my bike but I’m not sure how much the power would really increase, plus my insurance company wants to know if there’s any mods.
Cheers,
Dave
This is a great question! And the best answer is buy a different bike.
There is almost no end to the ways you can set money on fire by changing out bits of a bike, but getting it to make noticeably more power is pretty much the hardest thing to do. Changing the exhaust usually doesn't yield much, and it yields less if the bike doesn't make much power to begin with (but it doesn't cost less!)
And you're right about insurance - let's say you went the old school route of just straight up swapping the motor for a bigger one. The insurance company doesn't like that at all, and it's a toss up between becoming either extremely expensive to insure or just plain uninsurable.
Look on the brighter side - the MT-07 is a very popular bike right now, so it should be easy to sell for a good price. You can look around through the classifieds to see what you could buy for the same money. And the neat thing about bikes is that performance alone has almost no correlation at all with price - you could probably buy two ZX-11s with the proceeds of the sale. I'm not saying buying any ZX-11s is a good idea, I'm just saying if you're open to selling and buying another one, you have many many options. Also bringing it back to the first point, modifying a bike at best has a neutral impact on the value, usually makes it worth less, and in only very special cases does it typically ever increase the value. If you do modify your bike, keep the original parts! I'm begging you to not throw them out honestly. I'm very tired of bikes with cheap invisible LED turn signals, chewing gum handlebar grips, and pot metal bar end mirrors.

what power increase do you want? Let’s say 20hp. According to GTAM that requires 10 stickers to be put on the bike to make the necessary gains. Profit!
seriously when you’re feeling your bike isn’t meeting the needs you can probably flip your MT07 for a good price as it’s more palatable to more riders insurance wise compared to the MT09.
But check your insurance also prior to committing. If the numbers make sense, and obviously numbers aren’t everything…pull the trigger on what floats your boat.

Going to an mt09 Is a couple hundred CC’s, but a whole lot more bike. The they can be a handful for experienced riders.
you mention 2 years riding experience, the old man in me is thinking it takes 20,000km to become proficient, and another big chunk of miles to become expert on a motorcycle.
Id say it’s worth two more years on the FZ 07. If you think you need more power, try a day at the track - if you can outrun the R3s you might be right. If not, more power isn’t the answer.
Thanks for the responses guys. I was leaning towards the new bike but just didn’t know what kind of power increase I could get with mods. I do a few track days per year but I rent usually the r6 or ninja at fast riding school. I feel like I’d be ok on the mt09
