Upgrade Computer or build a new one?

I hesitate to mention it, for lots of reasons, but for recent versions of Windows there is also diskmgmt.msc (Disk Management MMC snap-in). No commands needed. Partition alignment is not possible with the GUI snap-in, it is possible with diskpart but you really have to know what you're doing. You can also use Macrium Reflect instead, which is GUI and will do the math for you if you tell it to align a partition you're creating/moving.

Also, dropping $600 on a GPU might be a little overkill for OP.

It would last a very long time. The 1060 might be a better choice (buck per value) but the 1070 benchmarks are close or higher than the Titan X...except the Titan X was over $1,000.

^ for all tech problems i consult my chinese friends too

I will add a huge X2 to maxing out the memory as much as the budget and Mobo allow, and upgrading at least the system drive to an SSD and keeping commonly used apps/games on it, while using old fashioned platters for simple bulk storage - videos, photos, etc.

I've done exactly this to multiple systems for myself and friends and the difference nothing short of amazing...best part is it can be done for a few hundred bucks and your time.

And yes, I left Windows behind many years ago, but I will also agree that a fresh install can have serious performance enhancing effects along with the other upgrades.

Hey dude, I'd suggest just building a fresh new computer. It'll be fun and you'll have the latest for the time being. They definitely improved the performance alot. And if you get a GPU, either get 2 AMD RX480's or 1 Nvidia GTX 1080 and you're golden for the future (especially VR). :)

Also, if you upgrading the CPU, you need a new motherboard and ram anyways, so why not just change everything at this point?

Ok. Sorry. It was more laziness than anything else.

There's a big ad for American Megatrends Inc. across the bottom when the BIOS boots, and I misinterpreted AMI as AMD.

As for overclocking, I only have a single fan in the box, one in the power supply and one on the CPU, and after installing a temperature program, the CPU is overheating. All are puny and original. So tomorrow I'll be out purchasing fans.

I bought it made from an Oriental gentleman in a store on Bloor Street. I'm not sure whether that proves or disproves your stereotyping attempt.

I used something called MiniTool Partition Wizard Free 9.1, which partitioned the drive fairly painlessly.
It took longer to flash the bios, as the documentation kept mentioning methods that weren't installed, or didn't function correctly, but I finally found something that worked.

The current case is a p.o.s., but I need to work out which m/b and/or CPU I'll look at for the future, so that I have a good estimation of the size needed.

Going from an I7 to an I5, seems like a downgrade, but I'll have to look into how obsolete my 5+ year old CPU is. Motherboard isn't on the list to support Windows 10, and neither is the Lynnefield CPU.

I'll probably hold out on the GPU for a while, as I can make due with what I have. I have noticed though, that my character seems to skip from place to place occasionally on the new monitor. Might have to check if the old monitor is the same or if I'm at too high a resolution. At some point I'd like to get above 1k, but I don't really want to spend more than a couple of hundred bucks on the card.

In the end I'll end up with a completely new computer as many of the parts can be migrated to a new box.

Thanks to everyone for all of their help and ideas so far.

at 5 years old you likely need new thermal paste between the processor and heat sink.

to check performance of a cpu http://cpubenchmark.net just plop in the model, you can do back to back comparisons. I'd get the gpu vs cpu/mb

For all of you suggestion a rebuild: why?

His i7 850 is equal to my i7 920. The one thing holding it back is that it isn't overclocked. If he's going out to buy a dedicated CPU cooler, it's an overall cheaper solution than a full rebuild. I know that the newer i5s are around 30%-50% faster than first generation i7s but there is nothing, unless you're into video encoding or very niche things, that require a stronger CPU. The bottleneck is still largely in the GPU.

If the primary purpose is gaming, the i7 850 overclocked will last a few years still. I have a feeling the CPU will fail before it becomes obsolete performance wise.

You mean build vs rebuild?

Who to Chinese ppl go to for tech support?

I think MiniTool was the one I last used too.

Upgrade vs build/rebuild. And I don't know lol this is my field but believe it or not, most programmers are Caucasian

or Indian....or Russian...or....lol

I kinda think of upgrade and rebuild are similar, thats all. Build would be from scratch.

I missed this before - this means pretty much nothing. 5 out of 5 computers in my household run Windows 10 on "unsupported" platforms. One is a very unsupported Atom N270 netbook. Another is a Core 2 Duo laptop. The only real problem I've seen so far are certain wireless adapters not working in W10 (specifically some Broadcom 802.11n chips) It's pretty much just the manufacturers washing their hands of any obligation to do anything to make running Windows 10 easier. On a desktop, with common components? Probably every single device will be detected & work fine out of the box

I'm on W10 as well, everything worked fine except for one driver relating to my wireless adapter (PCI-E, forgot the make/model).

You'll know if a driver is causing issues because you will BSOD randomly lol Finding the exact problem driver though will be a problem for regular users and if a workaround doesn't exist, then you have to rewrite the driver yourself.

O.k. now I'm having problems with LOL not loading - lol. CPU is fairly stable at 60 degrees, but went up to 75 at one point during a download of data. What does programming have to do with building/rebuilding P.C.'s?

^

Go buy a prebuilt computer from Alienware/Dell or something. Heck even NCIX sells them.

That's no fun...

I haven't switched to 10 for personal use yet. I even still have XP running on a couple of PCs.

What on earth are you running XP for? lol

film scanner....and an old printer all in one.
I hear that. I have a really old bubble jet that I just found a bunch of ink cartridges for. I can't seem to get a driver for it though on Win7
