Uniform Policing - Best Division - How to get involved?

A lot of people start off trying to get into Peel because they do their own testing.

Its a tough job to get simply because of the numbers. The only requirement is high school education, although now, many people have college and the pay, in relation to education requirements is very good.

Its started to become a business

How many police jobs come up in Ontario in a year? 200-300? 500-600? I dont know but remeber that every year, every college is pushing out probely 500 police foundation grads-- these are the people that will apply to every single posting that comes up, then add to that all the security guards, other folks that apply etc.. and its a numbers game.

So for every police job (fire and ems is the same) there are probely something like 500 applicants.

I heard that the last meter maid posting for Toronto received 10's of thousands of resumes and it was only posted for one week

Your numbers are way off ..

For Fire when i got hired i was up against 3000 applicants. They took 26 of us .. they do keep you on a list for 2 years though.
It is tougher and tougher each year to get hired in any emergency services field. Police overall is the easiest, than ambulance and fire in the last spot.

So I've been chewing over a few years as to if I should apply into the Uniform Recruiting program either in Peel or York.

Any uniform officers on this board?

Now I have a decent Full Time Job + buying a house soon, and will be 25 soon....so I believe I would be a good candidate?

Wondering if you guys were in this situation, thinking about applying? but not sure?

Im so sorry to hear that...

So 26 jobs for 3000 applicants = 1 job for every 115 applicants, so yea, my numbers are off.

Figure that every year since then, there have been how many students graduating from Fire/EMS/Police foundation courses?

how many fire jobs have come up since then?

Police/Fire/EMS courses in college are the most oversuscribed courses in relation to actual amount of jobs that open every year.

It used to be that police/fire/ems where the sacred cows in govt budgets, nobody dared to touch or even mention possible job cuts in those respective deptartments. It seems that with the 2008/09 downturn in the economy and the wide publication of the sunshine list, the public is more tollerant to actual cuts now then in the past.

To put it in perspective there is approx a few hundred college kids graduating from Pre Service Fire across Ontario each year.

As for jobs that come up, use Toronto for example. Toronto Fire will hold a recruitment every 2 years, and once the final is tallied they will hire 30 to 40 per recruitment class. Depending on budget they may host up 2 recruitment class' per year.

As for budgeting and job cuts .. its more of a tactical ploy for the politicians than anything. They want to lay off approx 100 Toronto Fire fighters .. that in turn is 21 front line trucks in Toronto. It wont happen .. Toronto Fire is already short staffed as it is now.

Do a major in criminology and minor in forensics... that'll increase your chances a LOT.

Don't bother with police foundations... it's not that great.

nobodys really hiring right now and its going to be about 2 years until the services re-open the doors and expect the standards to be quite tough

I dont beleive that toronto fire is short staffed, but I do not want to see job cuts there either way.

I think that the police/fire/ should all stop the scaremongering, when ever the idea that job cuts might happen-- however unlikely that might be, they all start with the " but people will die" etc.. crap.

If this is indeed a battle for public relations, then the police/fire really do have to step up, fight the politicans with facts, show the number of calls responded too, show the reducation in crime, show the public that jobs cannot be cut with verifiable facts and metrics instead of fear mongering. Show the value that you bring the public-- the ones that pay for the services. It should be easy, all the numbers i mentioned are tracked anyway.

Its like watching two kids in a schoolyard, the politicans on one end and the fire/police cheif on the other.

anyway sorry for the rant..............

To the OP... Best of luck to you and I hope you succeed. Just be aware that policing, like the military, is not a career that you can just "dip your big toe in to test the waters"; it requires a complete and total commitment of mind, body and soul should you decide to do it. Anything less than that is a waste of time for you and all those you've sworn to protect.

They're probably already producing the stats and presenting them to their respective politicians. But I'm sure the fear-mongering is much more effective in terms of public relations. ;)

Unfortunately, Toronto Fire is short staffed.

The city has not been allowing them to replace the people that have left/retired etc due to budget restraints.
I believe the Fire Chief stated that they are currently 100 people short of their margin.

Wow, I didnt know that, so this budget fiasco is not something new? looks like its has been on going issue for quite some time.

The first thing you should probably do is call the recruiting offices of the services you want to apply to and inquire if they are hiring.

I know for certain there are some services that are still hiring i.e. Peel, Hamilton

Next, if you haven't already done so yet attend a PREP practice session with ATS. It's free and you will find out in the morning if you are ready for the real fitness test. Just remember that peel offers the PREP test as well - I think if you pass with ATS the results are valid with peel. There is a different type of intelligence testing with Peel so you will likely need to write both tests.

Buying a house soon, gainfully employed and being 25 soon doesn't mean much nowadays in the hiring process. You should probably evaluate your skill sets and see how competitive you are. Right now, the process is more competitive than ever with people applying straight out of the army or have worked a security job in the past. They also emphasize volunteer work and also, want to know what are you doing with your free time?

If you know someone who works in recruiting or speak with a recruiter you can ask them what a competitve candidate nowadays applies with.

I've been through the process and can tell you, it's very lengthy. Good luck to you when you apply - the saying, "patience is a virtue" really holds ture to the months and months of waiting for an answers. And lastly, "no news is good news."
