Uniform Policing - Best Division - How to get involved?

So I've been chewing over a few years as to if I should apply into the Uniform Recruiting program either in Peel or York.

Any uniform officers on this board?

Now I have a decent Full Time Job + buying a house soon, and will be 25 soon....so I believe I would be a good candidate?

Wondering if you guys were in this situation, thinking about applying? but not sure?

I think your best bet would be to attend an information session and/or contact a recruiter with questions. And if nothing else, just apply. You've got nothing to lose by applying, and sometimes it takes more than one try to get on.

been to a few of them. I think I am just going to apply and see how things go....

I am not very optimistic as almost everyone is having some sort of a hiring freeeze....

took my nephew a few tries and about 3-4 years from first application

he tried Peel first I think...then Durham....got the run around with both, and finally made TPS this past May...so he's been to Aylmer etc and he's on the beat now

lots of politics and egos....had some woman fail him on the Peel physical because he didn't do the push-ups properly...even though he ripped off twice the minimum needed....stuff like that......being a strapping young white guy named Andy doesn't make it any easier when they're hiring for quotas first and quality second

networking with the TPS recruiter paid serious dividends for him.....same old deal....when you see eye-to-eye with the folks you're working with then things go along well.....and he didn't seem to click well with the other organizations

if you have connections with anyone that can give you a helpful nod then take the help

if a tough haul to make it in.....so having a good gig already is the smart way to go

First off, dont listen to people that say they hire for quotas or certain ethnic groups etc ..

Those days are long gone now, they hire the best person based on your skills/qualifications/interview etc ..

For you Peel would be best choice, and they are continously hiring. Watch the website for recruitment details.

Have you gone and done your testing yet? You have to get that done before you go to apply to different forces.

Peel gets close to, if not the most applications because you can take the test for free there as opposed to every other force you have to pay for it. This means that it is harder to get in. RCMP has the biggest hiring force right now but you have to be willing to go anywhere in Canada. Same with OPP, you have to be willing to go anywhere in Ontario. Metro is usually a really big hiring class also but not sure if they still have a hiring freeze on.

You sure?

Just so you know, they have way more people interested than they need (well paying gig without much of a special pre-requisite education). Not sure in Peel, but TPS right now is not really hiring ... the mayor is trying to save a buck, so who know what budget will be available in the near future etc. Provincial elections around corner ..... be prepared it's a run on a long distance. My friend went through the whole process not so long ago, and you are looking for 2-3 years minimum, before you will have your first placement and that is if you are the kind they are looking for. As you can imagine they are picky .....

If you are going to restrict yourself to one division your chances are that much lower ...

Yep. The same guidelines came down for fire dept hiring a few years ago .. they wanted females, black, asian and yellow purple people eaters. ( list goes on)
Now its based on skills/qualifications/interview etc etc ..

Good to hear, I sure as hell wouldn't want a purple people eater trying to save me if I was unconcious in a fire.

as I said...took my nephew 3-4 years and multiple tries.....and he finally did get the gig...so maybe they did change the priority....but they were definitely looking at quotas when he first started trying....based on what I was being told

A few years back I had a male (Caucasian) co-worker tell me that TPS told him right off the bat that they weren't looking for white men. Of course, this could just be an excuse, and there could've been plenty of other reasons he didn't make it on. But I've known plenty of white males (English-language only) that have made it onto to various police forces. It's true that it's crazy competitive, and that there are FAAAAAR more applicants than positions. You have to make yourself as competitive as possible, and that means having something that the applicant next to you doesn't i.e. languages, higher education, volunteer work, life experience, etc.

TPS was a pretty safe bet in the recent past. Being the largest municpal force in the country, they sent the largest number of recruits to Aylmer. But I certainly wouldn't bet on getting on with them any time within the next few years.

Well...I am looking at the testing dates and going to book them sooon.

Met a very cool Hamilton police female cop who actually got me thinking about this whole deal.

That's good advise, go with any division that will hire, but the pre-testing needs to be done.....GOT IT! :)

I do have a nice gig going right now....but wouldn't mind trying the force out to see how much I love it

I know a few cops. Police College classes are mostly white people. If it takes someone a while to get on it's either because the other applicants were better than you or they interviewed better.
Didn't "gel" with the recruiter because they had ego's or whatnot? Their ego didn't keep you from being hired, it was yours. Learn to check your ego at the door (otherwise you're likely not right for the job anyways).

As for being hired I'm sure it's like most jobs: make yourself the best applicant. If you don't know how to do that you better do some research before applying otherwise you're wasting your time/money.

And isn't Police College around $10,000+ to attend now? Better be real sure it's what you want before you shell out that money. Talk to cops who'll tell you the negative's of the job as well. People always ask cops at parties/etc what the weirdest/coolest thing is they've seen but no one wants to hear about the stuff the cop wishes he could un-see (and you better have the ability to deal with that stuff if you're applying).

Didn't the OP have psych problems in the past?

Yes around that amount but the individual force pays for this and then it is automatically deducted off your pay. If you flunk out or don't finish paying it off your on the hook. Another thing is you have to be hired to go to OPC you can't just pay and go there. I can't remember who it is that sets the limits but each regional service only has a certain amount of new recruits they are allowed to send to OPC.

Just what we need... more armed thugs on the street.

They look for stability also so if you're married that's a plus unless if you've been married to a redhead.

A lot of people start off trying to get into Peel because they do their own testing.

Its a tough job to get simply because of the numbers. The only requirement is high school education, although now, many people have college and the pay, in relation to education requirements is very good.

Its started to become a business

How many police jobs come up in Ontario in a year? 200-300? 500-600? I dont know but remeber that every year, every college is pushing out probely 500 police foundation grads-- these are the people that will apply to every single posting that comes up, then add to that all the security guards, other folks that apply etc.. and its a numbers game.

So for every police job (fire and ems is the same) there are probely something like 500 applicants.

I heard that the last meter maid posting for Toronto received 10's of thousands of resumes and it was only posted for one week

Have you considered doing a ride along? I have been out on two of them and that made it pretty clear for myself that this would be a career I would be interested in pursuing. I figured it was better to do the ride along first than to pay out the money for the testing.
